Mike lays out the blanket on the dead grass and Vanessa all but collapses onto it, legs unable to support her any longer. The impact sends shock waves through her side, but she’s just grateful to be able to breathe again. She lays flat on her back, hands clenched over her chest, checking for the steady rise and fall.

“That one’s the Ursa Major,” Mike points to a cluster of stars. She hadn’t even noticed him lying down next to her. “It’s a bear.”

“I didn’t peg you as someone who had a lot of knowledge on constellations,” her breathing slowly returned to its natural rhythm. 

“When me and my family used to go camping we would stargaze.”

“That sounds nice,” Vanessa replies, a heavy emotion settling over her chest.
