i saw in the server you seem to like mikey and ben together and i havent given thm much thought, could you talk about what you like of them?

obviously, if you do not want spoilers for the game or the arg, leave and go experience those for yourself! its so worth it, i swear!!!!

okokok so for those not in The Know, this is the basic rundown of what we think went down based on information found in the game and the arg :

ben worked at a video store and was the host of a pirate radio show called Thrasheye Vision. on this radio show he would be accompanied by his boy best friend, michael "mikey" vanley. mikey is described as ben's "total opposite," and seemed to be a more introverted half to ben's extroverted personality. he likely provided backup and wrote songs behind the scenes but wasn't really on the front line of things. over time ben's boss and the owner of the video store, frank, developed a focus on mikey and seemingly played it off to ben as him seeing mikey's potential as a musician. this interest came to a head with frank then abducting and using him for some kind of ritual, perhaps as a sacrifice, perhaps as a vessel. details unclear, but this made mikey into who we know and love today: the one. the only. mikey van lee, baby !!! mikey returns, but is obviously a Very Different Mikey, something that ben seems to struggle dealing with.

so theres already something there, right? the "opposites attract" piece is already compelling to me, plus the wording associated with the pair also points to them being more like lovers than just close friends (for example, mikey and ben's disagreements are called "trouble in paradise"). the biggest thing to me though is the fact that

ben is the one to, however unknowingly, lead his best friend to this tragic and painful end - like a lamb to slaughter.

thats already a lot, but i havent yet gotten into my favorite things to dig into with them so let me do that now >:3

FIRST OFF. something that i CANT and WONT shut up about is justsometrash.png. this can be found floating in the background of mikey's site and looks like so:

this is a missing poster that Ben put up in search of Mikey. When you flip the image and up the contrast, we think this flier reads: "Have you seen my friend? | Michael Vanley | 20[?], Brown hair/eyes, tan | Last seen Apr 30 7:30pm | His bike was found chained up at school over the weekend | if any info at all, contact | Ben Shortman"

its not mikey's family that's putting this up despite us Knowing that at least mikey's mother is in the picture. ben is the one looking for mikey and ben is the one to contact. his best friend went missing and when everyone else seemingly gave up on mikey immediately, ben continued to search for him! it's also very interesting to note the fact that mikey Kept this on his site deliberately. mikey is one of the most in control constructs in the game; anything mikey decides to keep or omit on his site is fully within his capabilities, meaning that the inclusion of this poster is no accident. even with the false airs of apathy over this poster - calling it "just some trash" - mikey craves the attention to his tragedy and Wants us to know about relationship with ben.

the second piece is from when mikey was commissioned (by fish! thanks fish!) to make a pride flag. and a pride flag we did indeed receive...

isnt it beautiful. anyway mikey drew art of himself and ben recreating the fucking yuri magnet pose. what the fuck.

my THIRD and FINAL thingy is his reaction to when you input "ben" during mikey's dressup segment:

this answer! is fascinating to me! especially when in tandem with his reply to when you input "rob". mikey is deflecting and getting defensive here. he's really not in much of a different spot to rob, talking about how much rob must miss his buddy when he, in fact, misses HIS buddy. i sent this in the discord recently, but i think it begs repeating so:

"i think that deep down, whatevers in mikeys chest these days gives an admirable attempt to start beating again at any mention of ben. someone did their homework on mikey , so the only person mikey deems relevant to his past is ben."

tldr i like mikeyben a lot and i want to put them in a centrifuge. thx for reading!
