I actually had a vastly different and more fun idea for this one involving Ema hiding and Kay finding her in a crime scene but I realised I wanted to make it more (vaguely gestures) Deep. Because these weirdgirls get enough "they're so fun quirky and and irresponsible and whimsical uwu" scenes in canon. Everyone talks about how Phoenix changed in AJ but not how Ema also became disillusioned after not getting her dream job, seeing a case involving evidence forgery (again), and having her hero become a shell of his former self while keeping secrets just like her sister did. The real her is in there, and Kay—who's seeing her for the first time in a while in this pic—needs to Find that Ema under all these layers of apathy and pretence. See the potential? Ema Skye man. Her. Just her. There's this one post that captures it all so perfectly.

a gleam into darkness

❝It’s just a white envelope, sealed with a strange symbol in black, two wings curving out from a center circle and three small, pointed legs. It’s not government-official, or something Ema recognizes at all. It’s not even addressed to them, but their house is pretty out of the way; it’s not like it got left there by accident. Irrepressible curiosity gets the better of her, and she breaks the seal open with impatience, almost excited even though it probably isn’t meant for her. The row of bills facing her makes her jaw drop.
