Milo Callum was born a rockstar. Sure, that might be a little bit of an exaggeration, but not in that boy’s mind. He was always destined to be a star, that much was true. When he was little, his mother would tell lively stories about her youngest child putting on her high heels and making his own makeshift microphone out of his father’s razor. He did it to be taller, but his mother said he had more fashion sense than her by the age of eight. Milo was a force to be reckoned with, and it was just his luck that his singing in the shower and everywhere they went got his mother to put him into singing lessons. He was seventeen when he finally got his first break. It was easy to round up a group of four teenage heartthrobs and toss them into the media fire. They were just one of those typical neighborhood boy bands from a city like Seattle, the kind who stayed up too late practicing in one of their parent’s garages, but they were more than that to each other. Milo had a group of lifelong friends, one becoming his best friend and his first love, and a promise that they’d always stay together no matter what happened.
It took them two years before they finally got on their feet as a serious band. A record deal knocked them onto Billboard’s Top 100 list before they knew it. It wasn’t the usual pop, and in fact, they steered more towards a punk rock sort of sound. It was theirs to own, and it wasn’t long until two albums were out. Their band was just exactly what they always wanted. Or at least, what Milo had thought he’d wanted.
New York was where they thrived. The band had nearly everything they wanted; a recording studio and all the money they could ask for. At the end of their touring season, they’d break off and do their own thing before reuniting for another season of touring and new music. At least, that’s what they were supposed to do. No one said Milo was kind, or even compassionate. Sharing the spotlight wasn’t exactly for him. He knew everyone loved him because he was the singer. He was the one people liked to look at, and the one people liked to talk to. His name was the one everyone knew. No one cared about his drummer, or even his guitarists – or even his boyfriend. No one needed to care, either. Words his manager would always tell him; words that would bring them both another insane amount of money. It’s his attitude that got him into the worst of trouble, and it wasn’t something he was aware of until his world came crashing down on him the minute he agreed to a solo deal.
His drug and alcohol habits were nothing to be proud of, and when Milo woke up one morning with hate sent to him through all his media outlets, he realized he was truly alone. The band had broken up the night prior; bankrupt due to Milo’s uncontrollable spending, and his uncanny ability to throw away everything they had worked for because at least he was having fun, and at least he had gotten the solo deal of his dreams. His relationship fell apart, and the people he had always promised to be there for turned away from him. This was nothing new – and Milo figured he could handle the overzealous haters. The ones that knew he was openly gay simply told him he should burn in hell for the sins he committed on stage and off stage. The band’s songs weren’t always filled with nice things, and having sex with men wasn’t exactly a secret when it came to Milo. His life was already thrown across the trashiest magazines there could be, and he didn’t need to see another picture of himself high on cocaine, or high on whatever it was he’d decided for a rush. Yet his solo deal remained, and that was his one saving grace as he was pushed back into the very spotlight that had nearly torn his life apart before.
His albums were exactly what the music industry had apparently wanted, but after a year of touring, Milo’s own anxiety and way of life just couldn’t be maintained any longer. He was constantly sick; constantly fighting relapse after relapse each time he tried to get clean. Eventually, Milo had decided it was best if he went home for a while. He’d broken his own contract and holed himself back up in the fanciest house he could find back in Seattle. Old friendships he’d torn apart were at the forefront of his mind, but being somewhere that had originally been so good to him was his only form of self therapy he could think of. His life was a mess, and with his recording contract on hold for a year, Milo figured it was his last chance to escape that spotlight he’d let control his life for so long.
