Producer Mimi Valdés and American singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams arrive on the red carpet for the global celebration of the film "Hidden Figures" at the SVA Theatre, Saturday, Dec. 10, 2016 in New York. The film is based on the book of the same title, by Margot Lee Shetterly, and chronicles the lives of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson -- African-American women working at NASA as “human computers,” who were critical to the success of John Glenn’s Friendship 7 mission in 1962. Mimi Valdes, chief creative director of iamOTHER, talks about her journey from editorial to working with mega superstar Pharrell Williams. She gives a glimpse behind the scenes of the makings of Happy, and how it influenced people around the world to create their own versions of the concept of “dancing like no one’s watching.”
Her personal story was also compelling. Growing up in the Manhattan projects, Mimi grew up with strong women role models, her mom and grandmother, and an emphasis on education. She majored in journalism in NYU- landing her first job at vibe, a hip-hop culture magazine. She worked there for 13 years, but was laid off due to a management change. Long-time friend Pharrell wanted to her on board to lead his creative content team.
Mimi was apprehensive of transitioning from editorial to multi-media content leader but the the risk motivated her and she was up for the challenge. Additionally, by surrounding herself with people that believed in her, this scenario is a strong example of how confidence is not something that you dig deep from inside you but rather we find courage from others.
It is a breath of fresh air having the chance to hear from a creative minority. Each person’s journey is unique; and that in itself makes our ideas unique. If we pursue what motivates us, there is no way we should doubt our decisions.
