Hi..I was going to pose a MUN related question but then I went through your blog. And now I'm curious about something else altogether..what is studying international relations like? Why did you pick this major? And what have you planned next in terms of your career? Thanks for your time
Hi! wow, my first ask in along time.
well, being an international relations student means that you have to be jack-of-all-trade. for a lot of people, when they think about this major, they will think that we study about the culture and politics of various countries all around the world. Of course we learn that, but a lot of people don’t realize that we also learn about diplomacy, international economy, international law, globalization, human rights, regionalism, stock market, heck we even learn a little bit of physics theory when we learn about international security & nuclear! In international relations, we don’t have a solid theory of our own, we “adapt” and/or “borrow” theories from sociology, politics, and even psychology. On top of that, You have to stay up-to-date about the news, and not only world politics, but also pop culture, economy, and sports (yes, sports!) Why, you ask? It’s because you don’t know what will happen. International relations is a study that keep evolving every time, so you have to prepare for everything. There’s a saying in our international relations department that is, “We can and we will learn every topic with the word ‘global’, ‘international’, or ‘world’ attached to it.” So, prepare for subject like international communications, science in international relations, or pop culture in international relations (yes, it exists.). My concentration in this major is international political economy, and yes it’s a little bit contemporary compared to the classic international security that talks about war and border and other traditional concepts. In IPE you’ll learn not only about concepts like international trade or distribution of resource, but also diaspora (about immigration and such), media, science, epistemic community, poverty, development, energy, and institutions like WTO, IMF, World Bank, and trade bloc.
International relations is one of those majors that seems overwhelming because the scope is so big, but it’s fun. Of course, if you compare it to the other major in social science, it seems like we have more assignments, more reading material, and more things to do in general. But, once you passed those early days of being international relations student, you will enjoy it. It became a part of your life. Your conversations with your friend will somehow consists of the subjects you study. It’s because international relations is very close to your daily life, despite what people say.
There’s no deep reason why I choose this major. I never had those fantasy about international relations such as career ad top diplomat, or an ambassador for foreign countries, etc. I always know that this major will be mainly about politics. I start to fall in love with this major because I got to learn a lot and a little bit of everything so no matter what topic it is or who do you talk to, you always find yourself understand and able to engage in those conversations and it allows me to broaden my perspective. I even fell in love with MUN because of international relations!
In terms of my career, I want to be a journalist. As I said before, international relations students are jack-of-all-trade, you get to learn everything, therefore you can be anything you want. A lot of freshmen in our department wanted to be diplomat or ambassador, but that’s not the only options you can get in international relations. One of my classmate said that he wanted to be an entrepreneur, and when I asked “why did you took international relations, then?” He said, “Because I want to be success internationally, and in order to do that I will have to learn how everything revolves in this world, and where can I learn about it better other than in this major?”
So, yeah. International relations is basically my life now. It was hard at the start, but as time goes by I fell in love with it and because international relations is constantly evolving, you get to learn something new everyday and I swear you’ll never get bored in this major!
-i’m sorry this answer is getting longer than i thought, but seriously consider studying international relations, you’ll like it.-
