Em (furniture, intimidation, recipe testing) has not contacted you in six weeks. Not strange. When her number lights up his phone, not strange. But when the voice on the line speaks- that is strange. It's lower, huskier, but not... Different. Not entirely. "My name is Francis and I am looking for a woman known as The Emissary." Funny. Isn't this all a little funny?

“Hello Francis” He likes the name, he likes the voice. He likes most names, most voices (most people even, for a given value of ‘likes’. for a given value of ‘people’)

He hadn’t thought the radio silence was anything unusual. She seemed uncomfortable with his leashed status; and it’s not like he doesn’t have plenty of other work to keep him occupied. If someone is calling about it (and on the apparently missing woman’s phone, no less) then maybe it’s worth looking into.

Certainly not because he happened to like the little woman.

“Do you think I can help with that, or is it a statement of intent?”

Is it weird to buy your Not Friends subscriptions to chocolate boxes? Because there’s a set of chocolates from all around the world he thinks she’d like, but he doesn’t want to overstep any boundaries. Maybe if he waits until a holiday...

There’s a mural that he passes on occasion, and he thinks about the paint on her hands every time he sees it.

He made a promise to a dead man to keep an eye on her, you know. Forgive him if he looks a little guilty from time to time when he remembers she doesn’t know that those bones are not in the ground.

He wonders if Frank would come to one of Carol’s dinners if he asked. It’s certainly less stuffy than the usual gallery openings and whatnot, but maybe a little too familiar. Of course, he could invite a whole bunch of the Bauers at once-- well, the ones who know about each other, at least.

He thinks about her request for a long time after she’s gone and everything is thoroughly cold. It could be worth it, to be friends at last, to have someone know who he is before the rest find out and he goes to his undoing(Funny, funny, funny; he was just getting used to being Not Friends)

Can’t they just have a nice meal where you don’t make him search his soul, Frank? Just one, that’s all he’s asking for.

The good doctor sets his fork down carefully, the light-hearted joke that he’d been about to make dying on his lips.

God, what can he say?

“There was… this ambush, back when I was serving. Not the sort of thing that would make it into a history book, but. Pretty bad”

He takes a deep breath, lacing his fingers together to give him something else to look at. This is the tricky part, telling the truth but not the whole truth, not the bits that burn and sting and spill other people’s secrets.

“I don’t know much about it, except I got pulled to help put folks back together again afterwards. Had a couple touch-and-go moments, but all my charges ended up alright”

Physically speaking, anyway

“I still see a couple of them on the regular. I guess, if I’m going to be proud of anything, it’s that I could help bring them home again”

The eldest Bauer sister falls in step with the German as he moves, an impressive feat considering their height difference. She glides along too easily, as if she belonged there from the start of his journey. They are alone. "You are terribly well armed for a Tuesday morning." She doesn't look up to him- her shaggy brown hair partially blocking her face from view.

The German is terribly well armed for most mornings, by the common standard. The schedule for the day simply means he is more obvious in his armament.

He is used to Bauers, to quietly denying any resemblance. His steps do not falter at her appearance, his gaze remains fixed on some distant point. (His hand dips into a pocket, withdraws neither gun nor knives but chocolate. They are alone)

“It is still early”

Frank Bauer has been near mute this visit. "I wish you could be more honest with me." Stated even more quietly than normal, her murky green eyes focused on the basement floor before her. Her Chinese sits untouched on her lap. Her voice wasn't blank- instead tinged with an ache. For him- could, not would, for whatever reason.

There’s a moment where he just doesn’t breathe, when he just lets the smile die as easily as turning off a light.(he’s enough respect for her that he doesn’t try to deny his duplicity, or joke it away)“Frank–” What can he say? What can he possibly, possibly say;                                                                                                       but the truth?

“I think…that if I could be more honest with you, you would not want to be here”

And it kills him, every moment.

In response to this

Most days, Doc exudes friendliness as easy as breathing. Most days, there is not such an air of quiet tension around his acquaintance. (Frank is often serious, but this is a different beast altogether) He knows there is a different feel to him once he stops smiling-- sharper, colder edges to his interest; but this seems to warrant it as few things do. If Ms. Bauer is the type to shy away from it, he had misjudged her very much indeed.

(Hands and wrists and sleeves are no concern of his--                                                                             until she makes them so. That much privacy he can offer)

He does not say “What are friends for?” because they are not, yet. He does not say “Why?’ because it is irrelevant. because he so rarely wants to know (He does not say that her obligation has no pull for him, because there are are yet other things he can lie to himself about tonight) “I’d be glad to help” He will even meet her eyes for a moment to prove his intent, before the smile flash-boils its way back to the surface. ”To think it only took this long for you to find some utility for me” (Forgive him. He does not do well in his own skin for very long)
