“When did you last sleep?” Lucy stumbles at last, clumsy and more obvious than she meant it to be, but maybe there are no good opening lines at moments like this.
Another one of those slow, brittle blinks. “Thursday,” Lockwood says, his voice sounding far away, untethered.
She frowns. “Which Thursday?”
“A Thursday.” Lockwood tilts his head slightly, a statue coming to slow life. “We still have those, don’t we?”

Lucy has been trying to ignore it – they’ve all been trying to ignore it – but it’s beyond a losing battle. The truth is rapidly becoming undeniable: this bed is too fucking small for three people.

“Would you… play for me?”
The question seemed to shoot out of him, almost unintentionally. Like he had been thinking about it for forever and couldn’t help but ask.
“I don’t think I can do that,” Lucy answered in a whisper, gently stroking his arm to soften the rejection. “I haven’t played anything in a quite a while.”
“Come on,” he placed his other hand on hers, as if to beg. “I’m sure the great Lucy Carlyle could manage.”

“You need to sleep,” he says.
Lucy says, almost without thinking, “I don’t want to.”
Because she doesn’t. Because sleeping means dreaming and Lockwood knows exactly what dreaming entails right now. And then there’s the cold, which still hasn’t retreated, even with the cape and the tea and Lockwood’s arm pressed in a warm line along her own while they drank it.
He doesn’t answer, just takes her by the hand and leads her from the kitchen, flicking off the lights as they go. And she lets him, because she’s tired and aching, and because it’s Lockwood doing it.
Or, recovering from walking in the land of the dead isn't easy, but Lockwood and Lucy are giving it their best shot.

“You’re being very touchy-feely, George. Are you worried about me?” he joked, and Lucy’s eyes followed the blush creeping up George’s neck and ears.
“Oh, shut it. What was it you said at Kensal Green? ‘It’s a medical necessity; it doesn’t mean a thing.’” George quoted, but there was no cruelty there, and he made no move to move his hands.
(Judging by the look on George’s face and the abundance of lingering touches, Lucy guessed it did mean something, but the emotionally-constipated boy just didn’t want to admit it.)
Lockwood gets a migraine, and George knows how to help. Lucy follows his lead.

It would be nice to be a camp bed, probably. Camp beds didn’t get their plans and belief in reality ripped to shreds in a single night. They just sat on the floor, being too short but still strong enough to hold teenage boys.
Unfortunately for Lockwood, his roommates wanted to talk.
