can i ask why you hate aftg? (i haven’t read it but i’ve been wanting to...) sorry if you already explained on your blog!

hi there!!!! basically aftg is an extremely graphic, triggering series that’s promoted a lot as this cute young adult series about college kids playing sports and that’s..... not it? it can be really traumatizing to read, especially when you aren’t aware of the triggers beforehand (you can find a comprehensive list here if you’re so inclined) and it also contains a lot of racist and homophobic tropes and characterizations..... plus it’s also just.... not very well-written? some of the quotes go really hard but all in all it’s uh.... not very spectacular in my opinion??? the fanon content is really great but like. the source material is so so bad :/// i don’t mean to shame anyone who enjoys it & i’m not saying you can’t like it or anything like that, i just really really hate the way it’s recommended all the time without proper warnings and without ppl recognizing how harmful it can be!!

okay i’m not sure if you’ve read aftg or not but if you haven’t, it’s very difficult for me to explain the full relationship that a lot of readers have with the series. honestly i never “enjoyed” reading the series and i wouldn’t read it again - the story itself is poorly plotted and executed, the characters are flat, it poses for young adult while being extremely graphicly violent and also just highly unrealistic - but the fanon is 100x better quality if that makes sense? i mean, don’t get me wrong, this website really glamorizes the series as just a fun little trilogy about college kids playing sports and in no way prepares you for the intense, unpleasant trauma porn the occurs throughout each book, but fanon also actually gives the characters personalities (which n*ra neglected to with about 95% of her own cast) and there is something special and comforting about seeing characters overcome the same traumas that you have survived. all in all, i would never say that i “liked” it and i would never, ever recommend it to another person. i’d even go so far as to say that i regret having read it. i don’t mean to shame the people who genuinely enjoyed it, and i’ll continue editing/reblogging content for the fandom because i do love some of the characters very much (and aftg creators are SO talented) but no, i really can’t say that i like it.

okay but the characters in the outsiders have such gay energy... i’m so glad other people think it too

the outsiders genuinely has some of the most realistic lgbt+ dynamics (both crushes and platonic friendships between lgbt+ people) i’ve ever read in a book and it’s so funny that [redacted author] wrote that whole book without realizing it... and she gets so mad when people are like “they’re gay” but ma’am YOU wrote it like that so whose fault is it really?????
