hi, i'm not sure if it's the right place to ask this but is it true that simon is considered a poc but not ambar? i don't really understand why argentinians (do we say it like that? i'm not sure) aren't considered poc or are they but only when they are in white-majority countries like the US?
Hi there :) So first of all, I’d like to say that it also highly depends on what the actors themselves consider themselves to be.
But as for your question, Mike and Valu, the actors of Simón and Ámbar, are both latinx. Latinx is an ETHNICITY, not a RACE. Which is the reason why we have black latinx, white latinx, asian latinx, etc. since latinx people can be of any race. In Argentina, most people are or consider themselves to be white, so Argentina is basically a country with mostly white latinx people. We cannot be 100%ly sure Valentina is a white latina, but there is only a small chance she is a non-white latina considering her family background. Mike, on the other hand, is from Mexico. A country in which the majority of people are of mestizo background, which means a background of mixed races. Mestizos are usually not considered to be white (even tho, again, that also depends on what the actors themselves want to be called), and Mike’s mom is definitely a mestiza, which is why Mike, ofc, is of mixed race too. That is why we would consider, unless Valu and Mike state differently, Mike to be non-white and Valu to be white.
That’s also why I often complain about people whitewashing Mike in their gifsets and edits. It is not that hard to keep his skin color, so do it.
