“..i’m here if you need anything, okay?”
jackson is a PECULIAR place. all bits and pieces of old world that folks have reclaimed, tidied up and made liveable again. the horses and wooden buildings remind him of home, but the people act in UNFAMILIAR ways, speak with words lev has never heard before. they’re part wolf, surely, the way they patrol the area they own, but also part seraphite in how they nurture and teach their young. part SOMETHING ELSE entirely, too. it’s uncomfortable to live in a home from the old world. it feels wrong, like he’ll be punished for this indiscretion, and makes lev’s hair stand on edge ( it’s growing back, and he likes how it makes him look like one of the jackson men ), so he spends most of his days elsewhere. OUTSIDE, with dina in the yard of her own old world house.
dina. she’s come to check on him where he sits on her front porch, an old world book and a journal ( a gift from ellie ) open in his lap. she lets him read her books, watches him PUZZLE out what the words he doesn’t understand mean, then lets him ask when he can’t. she listens, rather than SCOFFS, when lev speaks about the prophet, and shares the stories from her own faith. he’s been studying her scripture, too, finds himself drawn into it, like there’s something familiar hidden there, under the surface.
“rabbi.” he greets her, using that word she taught him means TEACHER. “i’m having trouble with this word: museum. the book keeps talking about it, but i just can’t picture it. it’s a place, right?”
