I’d say they have more problems than the average group of human children their age, but such is to be expected from a species that has never had experience raising its children until now. I’m sure they are, however, better adjusted than they would have been if we had given in and let them be abandoned in the wild somewhere, as the trolls had initially suggested! It took quite a bit of negotiation to come up with the current arrangement. We tried to pick the best possible guardian for each child, but politics and hemoism have resulted in some less-than-stellar choices. We’re hopeful, though, that the support system we’ve provided for them (of which this preschool is a part) will be able to overcome any negative influences to which they’ve been subjected so far. Although there’s a refreshing lack of some of humanity’s more prevalent issues, we’ve had problems with hemoist remarks, from children with both cool and warm blood. On the positive side, most of it wasn’t meant particularly cruelly, but it’s still worrying that such vocabulary and thought patterns have crept in despite our best attempts to stop them. I understand that it can be difficult for their guardians to forget centuries of social conditioning, but I suspect some of them haven’t even been trying to stop such ideas from being passed on. There are definitely some “feuds” going on! It’s quite adorable, actually, if a little hard to deal with. Us humans aren’t used to figuring out the difference between a healthy (if immature) black crush and a more worrying serious enmity, and the trolls aren’t used to policing children at all; however, I think we’re getting the hang of stopping what needs to be stopped and letting happen what needs to happen. For example, Vriska and Eridan like to argue and scuffle! A certain amount of that is allowed, as they both seem to be enjoying it. Altercations between Vriska and Tavros, however, are stopped as soon as they’re noticed. I think this actually seems to be more of a case of “put worms in his hair so he doesn’t know I like him” than either one-sided blackrom or platonic enmity, but sadly, that almost seems to be working out worse for him. On that note, Vriska causes the most trouble by far. She acts out whenever she thinks she’s not getting enough attention, which is pretty often! This and her complete disregard for other people’s feelings aren’t a very good combination, and poor Tavros has been taking the brunt of it despite our best efforts to separate them. Eridan on the other hand is actually pretty well behaved and happy to be left on his own- unless Vriska’s around goading him on, or he feels like he needs to show off for Feferi, and then he can be quite the handful. Kanaya is one of the best behaved. She’s so responsible! Because of her guardian's position, she’s friends with most of the other children, and sometimes she can get through to them when we can’t. Feferi’s also a regular little helper, although sometimes she gets carried away, and she’s still a little clumsy on land! Nepeta’s a bit wild, Karkat has some language issues, Terezi’s always licking things. They all have their problems, but it’s nothing unexpected and nothing we can’t handle! We’ve tried to keep in regular contact with all of the guardians starting from before the eggs were hatched and continuing to the present time, including telephone calls and yes, parent teacher conferences, but that worked better in some cases than others. Miss Maryam is the best, of course; she talks with us every day when she drops off Kanaya, and meets with us formally quite often as well. Miss Leijon dropped off of the grid shortly after Nepeta pupated, and although we heard that she occasionally contacted Miss Maryam, we only really got to talk to her again when she showed up at the start of this school year. Mister Makara is frustratingly (and probably purposefully) hard to get a hold of; I’m not sure that we’ve ever had a conversation with him that wasn’t quickly cut off by “more important matters”. Miss Serket speaks with us when we ask, but nothing ever comes of the conversations. Overall, I suppose the parent teacher conferences go rather smoothly; it can just be hard to make them happen in the first place, and to get the trolls (especially the older ones) to really take responsibility for their charges.
