Box Office Report: ‘Sherlock Holmes’ Underwhelms in Weekend Box Office
It looks like Sherlock Holmes can’t solve the mystery of making more money with a sequel.
Warner Brothers Pictures’ “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” earned a decent $40 million this weekend for the top spot, but it was far less than 2009’s “Sherlock Holmes” of $62.3 million over that Christmas weekend.
Another follow-up movie also was a disappointment at the box office.
Twentieth Century Fox’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked” was in second place with $23.5 million. The third film earned far less than 2009’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” with $48.9 million and 2007’s “Alvin and the Chipmunks” of $44.3 million.
However, the next Mission Impossible movie has a strong start with only a limited release.
In third place, “Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol” limited release at 425 locations earned $13 million, which averaged out to $30,588 per theater. The 300 IMAX locations contributed approximately $11 million of that amount.
The Mission Impossible movie will open in wide release on this Wednesday, December 21. The Brad Bird-directed movie starred Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg.
New Year’s Eve fell to fourth place with $7.42 million, a drop of 43 percent. And the Fox’s comedy “The Sitter,” dropped to fifth place with $4.4 million, a decrease of 55.3 percent.
Along with the wide release opening for “Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol,” a couple of films will open mid-week including “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” and “The Adventures of Tintin.”
