Caitlin was attacked because she's part of the Doctor Who cast. And I still can't see why everyone is calling Moffat a misogynist. I mean, the guy gave us Amy Pond, River Song, Sally Sparrow, Mrs Hudson, and developed an incredible Irene Adler. Those female characters have an immense weight on their respective shows, and I can tell you that many girls in those fandoms find them tremendously inspirational! Amanda wrote something on her Twitter about feminism and Moffat if you'd like to read it!
Perhaps there are many 'mistakes' on those characters as well, but every character needs a flaw. You can't have a perfect character, it would be boring and saggy. One of the funniest things about the Moffat issue is that some people called him a homophobe, if I'm not mistaken. How can a guy be a homophobe and work alongside Mark Gatiss, or make the Doctor and Rory kiss? Besides, no misogynist writer/producer would EVER include QUEEN NEFERTITI on their show!
I mean to be honest I think Caitlin was attacked because she's an actress on Twitter from a popular show. This happens to basically every actor on Twitter at some point. Whcih doesn't justify it, especially because Caitlin is so young, but I would be surprised if it was any kind of targetted "take down DW cast members" thing. And if it was you'd think they'd focus on Arthur Darvill and Karen Gillan, not Caitlin who hasn't even been on s7.
In terms of Moffat + sexism/etc I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree. I've written a lot about why I find Moffat's treatment of women in his fiction problematic but it's 1am now so I don't really feel like rehashing it. I will say that I do not think, nor do I suspect many people think, that Moffat is sexist in that he actively hates women. I think he is just a very privileged dude who is very out of touch with his privilege and does not demonstrate any deep understanding of issue that affect women or other less privileged groups. I don't think he sets out to write "weak" women. But that doesn't mean his work can't have a lot of questionable things buried in there.
The same applies re: the homophobia. I don't think he is consciously homophobic. But that doesn't mean his writing always treats other sexualities very well.
The whole sexism stuff was about Moffat's character writing lately. And yes, he actually did delete his Twitter account because of the non-stop hating he received. Even Amanda Abbington, who considers herself a feminist according to one of her later tweets, didn't consider Moffat a misogynist, stood up for him and Caitlin and a bunch of fuckheads asked for her head on a plate. The Caitlin issue isn't related to the sexism issue, but it all stemmed from the Moffat issue. Lots of issues!
As far as I know the only "official" remark from the vague area of Moffat re: deleting his Twitter came from his wife, who claimed he is simply very busy and found it a distraction and wanted to focus on his work + family. Now, to me that DOES sound like a bit of PR, and I would not be surprised if an influx of negative comments was part of his decision to leave Twitter. I don't like the guy, but I don't blame him for deleting his account. He has no obligation to anyone to stay on a public platform where people can send him all manner of harassment. If he left Twitter because he was getting a rush of death threats, that's not cool, death threats are never cool. However, if he left Twitter because people were calling him sexist etc, my heart doesn't exactly bleed for him.
Amanda Abbington unintentionally provoking the wrath of a bunch of jerks on Twitter is unfortunate. Again, I don't think she deserves in any way the kind of death threats she is apparently getting. (I have not gone to Twitter myself to look at them, but I believe they're there.) However her being a self-described feminist and saying she has no issue with Moffat does not mean that no other self-described feminist can ever find issue with Moffat.
I still don't know how someone calling Caitlin Blackwood a bad actress is directly related to Moffat deleting his Twitter. If anyone has proof of how those things are related I am interested, but as far as I can tell there is no real relation, EXCEPT that Amanda Abbington defended both of them.
Hey! I read the note on the reblog, and yeah, it was probably an omelette of all the bad stuff that happened recently. It might look that scrambled because first, English isn't my mother tongue, and second my brain can't function straight at night, LOL. It was extremely farfetched the possibility of cancelling the show, but what I meant actually was that Moffat could step back from it because of this stuff. And Caitlin IS being harassed for being on the show, unfortunately :/
Hey! Yeah, I don't mean it too personally -- your post was just a lot like a number of other posts I've seen and I finally needed to say something because I think people are getting confused about how related these things are or aren't. We don't have any proof that Moffat quit Twitter specifically because of criticisms that he was being sexist/etc, for instance. Tumblr just jumped on that assumption bandwagon. And there's a difference between death threats (which rumour has it he was getting, I have no proof either way) and "hey, that thing you wrote was sexist". As someone who does have a lot of problems with how Steven Moffat writes women but would never, ever tweet someone a death threat, I don't appreciate the two things being lumped in together. I think it's unfair to say that criticism of Moffat's work in terms of women, other sexualities, etc was directly responsible for whatever harassment he may have been getting on Twitter.I can't personally pretend I'd be upset if Moffat decided to step down from the show, but I do think the chances are basically miniscule. He likes his job far too much and is far too impervious to criticism to let that happen. In reality I think all that will happen is that he will avoid social media and that kind of direct, public fan interaction. Which, honestly, I think avoiding social media is in the best interests of most famous people. I've seen some of the stuff being thrown at Caitlin and it's mean and uncalled for, definitely, but I haven't seen anything that associates it with the other stuff going on? (The accusations of sexism, etc.) From what I've seen it's just stuff like "you're ugly and you can't act" which is a terrible thing to say to a child, but I don't think it stems from issues people have with sexism etc in Doctor Who.
See, what can I say? At first, I admired his acting skills, good looks, piercing gaze, you know, the usual... But then, I stumbled upon his magnificent interpretation of a velociraptor. When I was a kid, my favourite movie was Jurassic Park and my favourite dinosaur? Yes, the raptor. Hiddles + velociraptor = INSTANT LOVE.
Hi. Yes. I think I love you. Like, a lot. You curse a lot, I curse a lot. You're obsessed with the Hiddles, I'm obsessed with the Hiddles! I HAVE ALL THESE FEELS
Well, HI THERE!
Rawr back at you, because this blog is amazing!
