Working with my platform, Shining a Light on Life, I met Ms. Dawn Somers at an Out of Darkness Walk on USM's campus. In 2007, her son committed suicide, and she actively helps raise money for mental health awareness. Her courage and willingness to help others in need have really inspired me in my journey. #WCW #MissMS2016 #MissRiverland2016
I chose my talent because I love musical theatre. I am a vocal performance at the University of Southern Mississippi, and singing in any genre is my passion. My song choice isn't quite musical theatre, but it embodies a sassy independence and determination that I love and identify with. Last year, I was blessed to win a talent preliminary. A bit of a #TBT to my junior year of high school and being nominated as one of the coast's Terrific Teens for 2011. I was a busybody, quirky, and not quite as bold as the 21 year old I am today. I think this is a testament that coincides with my platform- it gets better! One of my favorite past Miss MS productions was last year's "All That Jazz"! I love jazz music and swing dancing, and I got to have a little taste of both! One of my favorite aspects of the Miss America Organization is its partnership with the Children's Miracle Network. Each state and each contestant helps to raise money for this amazing charity that provides medical care for children who otherwise may not be able to afford it. The fact that we are not just "pageant girls," and we strive to find BIG ways to give back to the community means so much to me. It is a great way to work with my pageant sisters and truly see the difference we can make. This year, I have been fortunate enough to hold not one, but TWO fundraisers benefitting the Children's Miracle Network. I am so excited about the amount of money we have raised and how many lives will be better because of it. I can't thank my wonderful, talented friends and my family enough. With last year's evening gown, I discovered that red is truly "my color." I love pairing the vivacious color with an Old Hollywood style that matches my personality. It reflects my passion for my platform and for my music. This year, I've really taken a regal approach- still in red. It was made especially for me by Sherri Hill. I cannot thank Lasting Impressions enough! If you come to the pageant, you can see this beautiful dress in person.
