El enigma de la señal WOW
La señal Wow! es el nombre, en círculos astronómicos, que se le dio a una emisión de radio que se sospecha podría tener un origen extraterrestre. Fue recibida el 15 de agosto de 1977, a las 23: 16 horas, por el radiotelescopio Big Ear. Por aquél entonces un procesador IBM 1130 captaba las señales obtenidas por el telescopio y las convertía en caracteres alfanuméricos que correspondían a la intensidad de cada emisión. Naturalmente, cuando estaban escaneando, los radiotelescopios “escuchaban” interferencias (ruido), generalmente ecos de la explosión del Big Bang. Y he aquí los sorprendente del caso, la emisión captada duró 72 segundos, tuvo una intensidad 30 veces mayor que el ruido circundante y se estipula venía de la zona oeste de la constelación de Sagitario. Lamentablemente no fue grabada pero sí registrada por el ordenador del observatorio en una sección de papel continuo. El acontecimiento pasó desapercibido hasta que unos días más tarde el profesor Jerry R. Ehman de la Universidad de Ohio, que por aquél entonces trabajaba como voluntario en el proyecto SETI, descubrió la extraña señal. A causa de sorpresa y conmoción que le generó el hecho, el científico escribió en el papel continuo la exclamación WOW!, palabra con la que luego fue bautizada la emisión. La secuencia extraterrestre registrada fue 6EQUJ5, sorprendentemente 30 veces más intensa que el ruido de fondo y de la cual actualmente todavía se está investigando el origen. El telescopio Big Ear se mantenía fijo y hacía uso de la rotación terrestre para escudriñar el espacio, por ello es que sólo podía observar un punto determinado del cielo por tan sólo 72 segundos. Esta es la razón que fundamenta el origen extraterreno de la señal, ya que la misma duró exactamente 72 segundos, mostró un pico durante los primeros 36 y luego descendió gradualmente. De igual modo existen otras hipótesis sobre el origen de la señal WOW! que vale la pena mencionar: Algunos creen que un satélite artificial atravesó el espectro de escaneo del telescopio y por ello este captó sus emisiones, pero lo peculiar es que las transmisiones de la tierra no pueden hacer uso de la banda de 1,4GHz (franja donde fue emitida la señal) además la emisión generada sería mucho más breve a causa de la velocidad en la que se desplazan estos aparatos. Otros consideran que el radiotelescopio pudo haber fallado durante un corto tiempo pero esta teoría fue refutada ya que no se volvió a repetir suceso semejante ni el aparato presentó problema alguno. Están los que estipulan que el origen de la emisión fue un acontecimiento espacial terriblemente potente, pero también fue descartado ya que la explosión de un cuerpo celeste se emite en todas las frecuencias. Como verán la única explicación posible que resta es la de que una civilización extraterrestre con un potente transmisor puedo ser la responsable de la señal WOW!. Pero… ¿ustedes que creen?
The enigma of the WOW signal
The signal Wow! is the name, in astronomical circles, that was given to a radio broadcast that is suspected to have an extraterrestrial origin. It was received on August 15, 1977, at 11:16 p.m., by the Big Ear radio telescope.
At that time an IBM 1130 processor captured the signals obtained by the telescope and converted them into alphanumeric characters that corresponded to the intensity of each emission. Naturally, when they were scanning, radio telescopes "heard" interference (noise), usually echoes of the Big Bang explosion.
And here are the surprising ones of the case, the captured emission lasted 72 seconds, had an intensity 30 times greater than the surrounding noise and stipulated came from the western zone of the constellation of Sagittarius. Unfortunately it was not recorded but it was recorded by the observatory's computer in a continuous paper section.
The event went unnoticed until a few days later Professor Jerry R. Ehman of the University of Ohio, who at that time was working as a volunteer in the SETI project, discovered the strange signal. Because of the surprise and commotion that the fact generated him, the scientist wrote in the continuous paper the exclamation WOW !, a word with which the broadcast was then baptized.
The recorded extraterrestrial sequence was 6EQUJ5, surprisingly 30 times more intense than the background noise and from which the origin is still currently being investigated.
The Big Ear telescope remained fixed and made use of the Earth rotation to scrutinize the space, that's why I could only observe a certain point of the sky for only 72 seconds. This is the reason that grounds the extraterrestrial origin of the signal, since it lasted exactly 72 seconds, showed a peak during the first 36 and then descended gradually.
In the same way, there are other hypotheses about the origin of the WOW signal! which is worth mentioning:
Some believe that an artificial satellite went through the scanning spectrum of the telescope and therefore it caught its emissions, but the peculiar thing is that the transmissions of the earth can not make use of the band of 1.4GHz (band where the signal was emitted) In addition, the generated emission would be much shorter because of the speed at which these devices move.
Others believe that the radio telescope could have failed for a short time but this theory was refuted since there was no such event or the device presented any problem.
There are those who stipulate that the origin of the emission was a terribly potent space event, but it was also ruled out since the explosion of a celestial body is emitted at all frequencies.
As you can see, the only possible explanation that remains is that an extraterrestrial civilization with a powerful transmitter can be responsible for the WOW! Signal. But ... you who believe?
