The week that Frank was missing had been one of the longest, and worst, of Hannibal’s adult life. And not just because he shared in the terror felt by all of Frank’s friends and family that they wouldn’t get him back...but because Hannibal had not been able to freely show that he felt the agony as well. He had been Fenton’s friends for years, true, and he was a fixture in the Hardy family’s life; they all knew him, the boys considered him their friend as well, but...there was always the professional line. The awareness that he also worked with Fenton, as a consultant and on-call therapist for the Network and ATAC’s use.
But Frank was special. Frank meant more to him than Hannibal could ever dare to let on. It was never explicit, but he knew that the younger man knew it, knew that the spark there, the chemistry, was mutual. And so, when Frank had been gone without trace for three days, Hannibal had been in just as much hell as Fenton, Laura, and Joe.
They’d found him--and then lost him again, because he was so traumatized, so hurt, and by the time they realized he was in danger he’d fled the hospital. And he was gone another three days before they finally, finally, pinned Justin Carrini to the wall and found the bunker. Frank was rescued along with the others...and the slow, aching, tragic journey towards recovery began.
Hannibal was his therapist. That was not a matter of working for the Network, because Frank was placed on leave anyway, and made it clear he wouldn’t be coming off of leave. Because they had history, and Hannibal had the training, and because he was permitted to assist Dr. Chilton and Dr. Bloom in the assessments of Carrini’s sanity, Hannibal was asked to treat Frank especially, and he accepted without hesitation.
He wished that he could have given Frank better. All that he could do was sit with him, show him the same love and patience and understanding that he always had, to let Frank find his own way out of his mind to open up to Hannibal again. The flirtation was still there--always--but Hannibal was not looking to abuse or manipulate the boy he cherished so deeply.
It was six months after his rescue that the trial was scheduled, and it was down to the wire; Chilton wanted Carrini in his box, and was arguing viciously for an insanity defense. Alana knew better, but she and Hannibal could see the ground slipping out from beneath their efforts to prevent this.
Hannibal looked up at where Frank was pacing along his library shelves, more manic energy than usual in the young man’s movements. Frank was at ease there in his office, but he did not typically fidget or pace, even when he didn’t want to talk. “Frank,” Hannibal called quietly. “Come back down here with me. I can see you nearly vibrating out of your skin....is it because of next week?”
