       ‘    Well , if I didn’t know better , I’d say someone broke in !    ’   The booming laugh seemed to startle the forensic kneeling by some shards , who let out a quiet curse and picked up the piece of glass they’d dropped , but if the fresh detective noticed he made no sign of it . Instead , he turned a beaming grin to the young prosecutor    ----     whose expression quickly dimmed the smile on his face . 

      Shifting , uneasy , Gumshoe fished out the pencil he kept behind his ear and tapped it against his notebook in an attempt to divert his nerves .    ‘     Uhh ... what do you think , Sir ?    ’

〔 ♠ 〕 IT’S NOT every day that the chief prosecutor suddenly sweeps through the doors of one’s office, much less that he starts making demands that are -- frankly, ODD. or, would be odd, if he didn’t know the context quite thoroughly  ;  his latest client had been accused of a set of stabbings, with the most important evidence tying him to the crimes being a set of knives belonging to him that were used to, well -- YOU DO THE MATH. it would appear they’ve gone missing, though, judging by the prosecutor’s query. HOW VERY TRAGIC.  --- & how truly, truly sad that they would immediately suspect an upstanding attorney of having something to do with it. (   OH, TO BE FAIR, THEY SHOULD. he’s laughing a little on the inside. it really took them that long to notice -- ?   ) 

     ❝  PLEASE, PROSECUTOR  :  slow down a little.  ❞ his brows draw together in concern, but he still gestures politely towards one of the armchairs set in front of his desk. ❝  could we, perhaps, move back a few steps ?  i’ve absolutely no idea what’s going on. i’d appreciate it if you could explain the situation before you start asking questions about it.  ❞

          phoenix PAUSES. how is he supposed to respond to something like that?  ‘ the receptionist? ’   ( he HADN’T, but he had said that miles was here, and that meant it was fine to go in, right? weren’t they supposed to like, lie and say  ‘ oh, sorry, he’s on break ’  if  it wasn’t? ).  “ … the door was open? ”  he replied after a moment, even though that was an answer to a question that edgeworth had NOT asked. it took another pause before phoenix continued.  “ so… nobody, i guess. i can leave if you want——. ”

          he hadn’t thought this far ahead. or, well, yes he had. he, after all, had a reason for walking into the prosecutor’s building and straight up to miles’ office; that’s not something you just do spontaneously. but what he’d failed to account for was, though he had something he wanted to say, he definitely hadn’t planned out how to say it. for some reason, he hadn’t accounted for what happened after miles had opened the door: time to stumble over his own words.  “ hey. edg———miles. i, uh... thanks for flying in to check on me. and a big thanks for helping me out with that case. i... really couldn’t have done it without you. ”  though that... didn’t nearly account for everything he wanted to say to the other man, it was certainly a start  ( and, honestly? phoenix doubted he’d ever get out everything that he wanted miles to know ).
