What is mixed-ability dance?

In our society, professional dancing is generally considered to be reserved for a somewhat elite minority. Only those with the most arched feet, most flexible bodies, highest jumps, and best turns are able to succeed among the cutthroat competition. Even talented able-bodied dancers have difficulty thriving in such a ruthless setting. Unfortunately, this belief tends to be true. Sadly, at many dance studios across America, a student with a disability would probably be refused admittance to classes. Former dancers who have acquired handicaps, disabled individuals who want the opportunity to dance, and able-bodied dancers and choreographers with a heart for those with disabilities have collaborated to create professional companies that combine the talents of both able-bodied dancers and dancers with disabilities in a movement called mixed-ability dance.
