Jacob stopped in his tracks, dark brows knitted in confusion and a rising anger of his own. The native is someone he trusts beyond measure and has for years upon years, but this abrupt, short-tempered behavior contrasted with what used to pass for closeness between them. His eyes search Ayashe’s features with an earnest gaze while he reaches to touch her shoulder lightly; part of him is terrified to push too far and have her leave again, though the rest yearns to know, whatever the cost, why she has been behaving in this bizarre, evasive way – when at one time, not so long ago, she would scarce leave his sight when he was awake.
“Have you tired of me? Is that it, Ayashe? Is my presence so very loathsome to you that you can’t even look at me?”
