The Importance of Mrs Dewhurst
I think that Mrs Dewhurst is a symbol for society, in particular in the 'sexy party episode', [ep4 I think]. When Rae comes home from her meeting with Kester and the morning after when she is emptying bins, Mrs Dewhurst is watching her. She gives her a slight nod and a smile in the morning, when the audience is expecting her to scowl and tell Rae's Mum. I think Mrs Dewhurst is happy to see Rae enjoying life and having friends. Mrs D is a curtain twitcher so no doubt she had witnessed the night that Rae hurt herself and her lonely months leading up to it. I think that Mrs D feels guilty that she noticed Rae was down but never did anything to help her. This happens all the time in society where people just notice others hurting but do anything to stop it.
