I don't know if you've already done this but I'm trying to be more active on tumbler so, what genre of music do you think the crew likes? Like, I personally think Mal like divorced dad rock. :)
sorry this took me forever and a half!!! i got two music related questions like , the same day and my brain froze despite loving both asks!! ty sm for sending <3
ooh there have BEEN lots of crew music conversations and i feel like like i have shared a few opinions but not fully formed thoughts so:
mal: i could see the divorced dad rock thing!! i think i’d be personally inclined to lean into like straight-up folk songs?? it just feels like Him to me. shoutout to this folk song @wateronagreasefire mentioned wrt him. so good. one of his idiosyncrasies us that he really needs to listen to music to fall asleep/sleep well but he’ll only do it on the ship bc otherwise he needs to be Alert.
wash: Anything and Everything. he doesn’t care he wants to listen to all of it!! he may not Love all of it but every genre is worth a shot. he as a particular interest (and an impressive collection) in archiving music from earth-that-was. special fondness for musical theatre and comedy music.
simon: i know this is gonna seem sooooo stereotypical simon but i genuinely think classical music. i think big emotional instrumental swells of music in particular move him to tears in a way that’s almost impossible of any other art form, but he also appreciates the Control and Precision of the classics. (also a huge fan of the discovery that music can be a helpful tool in river’s recovery process and any music that soothes her is suddenly his favorite song ever, actually.)
zoe: see zoe is actually where i’m personally leaning more classic rock/dad rock? i don’t know why other than just vibes. is also the most prone to humming/singing to herself around the ship without quite realizing.
kaylee: POP POP POP. britney spears and kesha and janelle monae and whoever the modern contemporary pop icons ons are. also loves upbeat songs that are actually super depressing if you listen to the lyrics lol. ith brief interludes into pop punk ala paramore.
jayne: country! through and through. he will also absolutely weep at a melodic break-up song but that’s between him and god. has a good ear and can play a lot of songs he likes that way after the first few listens. one of more endearing qualities that he actually really likes when a song challenges him and will spend months trying to perfect it just so it sounds nice around a campfire. (look i’m clinging to that jayne with his guitar scene. one of the best things to come out of the film).
book: like i said in the karaoke post, i love the idea of book being really into metal, but i also think he’s very open to all types of music. he’s not wash’s level of like, fanatic interest in hearing every song every made, but certainly has an eclectic taste. some spiritual stuff is nice but like… that’s Work for him, yk? music is to relax.
river: lofi music. or the kind you hear at a spa or on one of those “focus your mind” youtube videos. anything Calming and Chill. and ambient. also some of the instrumental/classic music simon likes because she associates it with him and anything she used to dance to and a little bit of operatic music, if she’s in the right mood.
inara: i have to imagine there’s modern music in the verse to and inara has her thumb on the beating pulse of it because she needs to stay up to date if any of her clients are affiliated with the industry, so she listens to a little bit of everything. very heartbreaking melodic music is her bread and butter as well as like… florence and the machine type music. she has the cortex-connected device that can most consistently get whatever radio channels their might be on the deep end of space. (kaylee goes to her shuttle to listen to whatever top100 songst dropped. among other things. 👀)
