However, there also are many who are unable to advantage of this service due to lack of knowledge of regarding how to port a mobile number.
Easy Guide to Mobile Number Portability
Contact your new cellular service provider to know about the documents required by them to start the MNP procedure. Usually, the documents are same as those required during the purchase of a new SIM card.
Collect a Consumer Acquisition Form (CAF), together with a porting form from your new network operator.
Use your current mobile number to send an SMS to obtain a 'Unique Porting Code'. This code will also work as your reference number to check the status of your porting request.
Unique Porting Code (UPC) can be obtained by sending an SMS with the text “PORT”, followed by space and your 10 digit mobile number to 1900. (This procedure to port a mobile number is not applicable in Jammu and Kashmir because of unavailability of prepaid SMS facility in the state. If you are a J&K resident and want to know how to port mobile number, you can dial 1900 for relevant information and UPC.)
You will receive a UPC by SMS. The UPC thus provided also has an expiry date and the consumer needs to apply for mobile number portability before this date.
Using this UPC in the required fields, fill up the Consumer Acquisition Form and Porting form.
Attach the form with identification proof and address proof, as required by your new cellular service provider.
Submit the duly filled forms together with all the required documents and recent passport photographs.
The fees for mobile number portability will need to be paid at the time of submitting the form. It is usually a very nominal amount.
The cellular operator will provide you with an empty SIM, which will be activated as soon as your request for porting the mobile number is accepted.
Consumers receive an acceptance message in order to confirm the porting request. The message is generally sent within a day of submitting the form.
The procedure to port a mobile number takes about a week and you are informed about the date and time of activation of your new SIM through an SMS.
