mobile wallet scam
real quick, I want to explain the scam because its fairly new and I haven’t seen much information about it online.
The number that called me that morning was spoofed to look like the service number from my bank. The guy who called me knew my name, card number, and address. He didn’t ask for a PIN number or CVC, nor did he ask for my bank account number or social security. Therefore, I really thought it was legit (and i was freaking out). He made up a story saying my card was being used in California.
What happened was that he claimed my card was being used though samsung pay (like Apple Pay) and sent me an email with a verification code for me to “verify it’s not linked to my account”. He insisted that I read the code back to him, and that’s how he was able to connect to samsung pay and use my funds.
He explained that he would lock my savings account and start a new one to dispute my “charges”. He had me move the money from my savings to my checking. Seeing my account was in fact locked online, I thought that’s what happened. The real reason it locked was because of a huge purchase made at target. Since it was a large purchase, my account was locked automatically by the actual bank, not him. He must’ve known that would happen.
Luckily, my mobile banking wasn’t locked so I was able to see the funds missing. I called the real number and the lady I talked to knew exactly what happened. She cancelled my card, had me file a dispute online, and I have to pick up my new card from my bank when I’m in town in two weeks.
Looking back, it was so incredibly STUPID and OBVIOUS that it was a scam, but I had just woken up and already convinced myself it was real. My anxiety went through the roof, and those assholes took advantage of that.
Thank you so much to everyone who has donated. I have enough now to help me for the next couple weeks. I will pay everyone back ASAP once the dispute goes through. Hopefully its not long and there’s no complications. Please be careful who you talk to!!
