Her father and mother were a bad match, as her father is Talentess.
Her father holds resentment towards her having an ability. He tried, though not very hard, to cover this resentment up throughout her childhood.
Her mother spent most of her time trying to salvage the relationship with her own family that she effectively broke up by marrying somebody without an ability.
Neither parent paid much attention to her as she grew up. They were often either focused on their own lives, or fighting with each other.
As a result of this, she spent most of her childhood desperately fighting for their attention. She thought if she did well in school they would be proud, but neither of them ever really were.
Her father is a big part of the reason she's worried about the systematic issues, and why she wonders "How much stronger would our world be if embraced the powers that unite us instead of narrowing our focus to that which sets us apart?"
Though, she barely talks with either of them anymore, and she's done her best to bury them in her past - she's made sure nobody knows she's related to them at all - part of her still hopes that if she gains enough power, if she fixes enough of the world, one of them will actually care.
I'm Genya Safin, you've likely heard of me, unless you live in a cave in the mountains, or under a rock. In which case, I'm a Tailor and a member of the Grisha Triumvirate. I've been able to work with many incredible people in my life, many of whom I still work with, and have the privilege of calling friends.

The nickname Shortfuse was given to her by the soldiers in her regiment after she failed to defuse a practice bomb, an exercise which the rest of the group succeeded at, as well as because she was the shortest in the group and quick to anger
The nickname Fuse is just a shortened version of Shortfuse
Only her family has ever called her Sunshine and it comes from the shortened version of Raisa being Ray
She hasn't let herself properly feel an actual emotion in like 3 years
She just about never talks about herself so somewhere out there there's a notebook of pretty much everything she ever told her army friends because they wrote every detail they got down in hopes of piecing together her life
She's never made any actual friends in the palace but she does still write to her old friends occasionally and several soldiers she fought with work in the palace as well
She doesn't often directly deflect questions about herself but she does tend to redirect them to avoid answering
She's still in contact with her parents, they write often

She's very generally angry, not only because of losing Genya, she's held on to just about everything anybody has ever done to wrong her
She's really indecisive when it comes to most things
Her hair is naturally a little curly (think loose-ish ringlets) but she has no idea how to take care of it so she just ties it up to hide the frizz that comes from brushing it
She has her fair share of scars, most of which are from bullets, though none are visible in full uniform
She forged legal papers to get into the army at 15. As far as the law knows, she was 19 at that point
Early Life
For her first few years, she and her sister were very close. They fought and argued often, usually over stupid little things. They were still angry at each other over an argument about a scarf that Genya borrowed without permission when testers came and took Genya. That scarf very quickly became one of Raisa's most important possessions.
As soon as the news of Genya working at the palace reached her, she put together a plan to get herself in there too. She initially ran through break in plans but she decided, in the end, that she probably wasn't skilled enough to pull any of them off. She figured out what it would take to become a palace guard and threw herself into that instead.
Army days
Initially, Raisa was worried about not fitting in. Several of the guys in her regiment were old friends or at least knew each other in some capacity, all with nicknames for each other. A worry that was made significantly worse by her failing the group's first bomb disarming drill. An act that, rather than setting her apart from the group, solidified her spot as a part of it with a nickname of her own.
Not long after she joined the first army, she took a bullet to the right shoulder. She can't raise her right arm all the way since she never quite fully recovered.
Not long before she left for the palace, one of the soldiers in her group, Sasha, got shot. It punctured a lung and he didn't survive. It hit everyone in the group hard, but it hit Raisa the hardest by far - he died in front of her.
Guard days
Generally, being a palace guard was pretty uneventful. Then again, she only got to be one for about 6 months. She tried to get Genya's attention quite a few times but none succeeded.
Ketterdam
Stephan and Danya were moved to be stationed in Ketterdam. Raisa visits whenever she can. Sonya goes with from time to time.
