i know testosterone can stop periods, but how exactly? does it stop the ovaries releasing an egg so the lining never needs to build up then shed?

Sort of, but further back in the process - you’re supplying your body with enough testosterone that it says ‘shit, why waste time making estrogen and whatever, i can coast on this.’ And thus doesn’t go through the hormone cycle that tells the ovaries to start ripening an egg for release.
