Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet
Sonny Rollins with the Modern Jazz Quartet is a classic jazz compilation album released in 1956 on the Prestige label. It features some of Sonny Rollins' earliest recordings as a leader, specifically capturing sessions from 1951 to 1953.
Album Overview
While the title highlights the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ), the album is actually a collection of three distinct sessions:
The MJQ Session (1953): Only the first four tracks feature Rollins playing with the full Modern Jazz Quartet (John Lewis, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke).
The Art Blakey/Kenny Drew Session (1951): Eight tracks feature a harder-driving quartet with Kenny Drew on piano and Art Blakey on drums.
The Miles Davis Cameo (1951): One track ("I Know") features Miles Davis on piano, marking Rollins' first recording session as a leader.
