The Modimolle Escape
Guys we've been saying 'umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu' hey, well we experienced it first-hand this past weekend. An old Travellingcheapskates friend Linda and her fiancé offered TCS a two night stay in a self-catering farm chalet in Modimolle, Limpopo to the value of R800. A somebody pinch me moment right?...Being the Travellingcheapskates we are this was a perfect scenario. We got cracking, jotting down possible accomplices, drew up a grocery list, worked out petrol cost, distance to be travelled, things to do in the area and all that jazz. After all the in-between life moments we finally saw the Modimolle weekend take shape as we joined the freeway, Friday evening around 6pm with buds Nosipho Njomi and Thembi Majola.
Arrival in Modimolle was an adventure alright, what should have been a two hour journey stretched out to a good 6 hour drive. No lie....the bright side to it is that we figured out the main streets in town, got a good feel of how far Vaalwater is from Modimolle, which direction Polokwane is- all useful information one may argue. The general knowledge session had a rather epic scary movie moment. In our town circling routes we took a wrong turn into the cemetery and this had to happen after 10pm with lighting in the background, scary stuff considering all the lightning and flying broom stories one has heard about the province. And you'd think that was enough drama for one evening- well No! At 23:45 on the sandy road leading to the farm accommodation we managed to get stuck in the sand in-between bushes, on a pitch black night not a full moon in sight, a scene from a movie I tell you, a genuine watery eye moment as our car pushing attempts seemed useless. A Jasper from the accommodation place came to the rescue.
Waking up to a beautiful sun, rising above the Modimolle Mountain in the distance, Blesbucks and Impalas in our view and acres of untamed nature that the city life deprives us made the Friday night drama blurry. It wasn't long before we had our morning walk, jumped on the mountain bikes. Travellingcheapskates Philile gathered firewood for the braai-master session with fellow mate Pearl. The afternoon was spent in Polokwane at a traditional Pedi wedding that we pretty much gate crashed, Nosipho is friends with the bride and the rest of us well we are friends with Nosipho lol. Despite our status we got into the wedding vibes and enjoyed the wedding step parading up and down the streets, authentic African style. Made sure to leave before dark with swerve back to our weekend haven two hours away from peaceful Polokwane cbd. Late night talks about life lessons, childhood stories and a bit of politics before bed time was in order.
The next morning was pretty much a wrap up session making sure not to miss checkout time. A brief walk before breakfast and last check of possession before making an experienced exit out the sandy road of the Kransvley Farm Resort. Our curious nature would not let us come back to Jozi without setting foot at thee Warm baths. We decided to make a mini stop at the resort that confirmed one's overly-active imagination state, the sight of the spring fountain was rather a disappointment as opposed to imagined natural hot springs, then it was off to Jozi Maboneng.
