These retro cake donuts are a beloved confection that will take you back to a bygone era. They have a crispy, golden exterior and a wonderfully moist interior. Ideal for a delightful snack or breakfast!
Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour. 1/2 cup granulated sugar. 2 tsp baking powder. 1/2 tsp baking soda. 1/2 tsp salt. 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg. 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon. 2 large eggs. 1/2 cup buttermilk. 1/4 cup sour cream. 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted. 1 tsp vanilla extract. Vegetable oil, for frying.
Instructions: Combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Beat the eggs in a separate bowl and mix in the sour cream, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Blend thoroughly. Mixing until just combined, pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. The dough should be slightly sticky; do not overmix. After transferring the dough to a floured surface, give it a few gentle kneads until it comes together. Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch, then use a donut cutter or a round cookie cutter with a smaller one for the center holes to cut out donuts. In a heavy-bottomed pot or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit 175 degrees Celsius. A few donuts at a time, carefully drop them into the heated oil and cook them for one to two minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown. Using a slotted spoon, remove the donuts and set them on paper towels to absorb any remaining oil. If desired, you can dust the donuts with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon while they're still warm. Before eating, let the donuts cool slightly. Fresh is when they taste the best!
