Tussocks of Molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea 'Edith Dudszus' (purple moor-grass) turn orange-yellow by late autumn. This cultivar has been selected from the British native Molinia caerulea for the purplish brown to almost black flower stems and dense flower spikes. In the border this grass echos the shape and colour of the stooled (pruned) Salix alba var. vitellina (golden willow) stems.

View across the Wet Area where Sesleria ‘Greenlee’ is still quite green. The foliage of Darmera peltata, to the left, however is decidedly autumnal as are the Molinia cultivars in the background.

In Scampston Walled Garden, Yorkshire, UK, the waves of Molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea 'Poul Petersen' (purple moor grass) have taken on their burnished golden-brown autumn colours. Other parts of the garden are filled with plant diversity but here the the planting designed by the Dutch plantsman, Piet Oudolf, is a lesson in simplicity.

Still providing a graphic looking display in the winter garden of the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Hyde Hall, Essex, was the vertical tussocks of Molinia caerulea subsp. caerulea 'Edith Dudszus' (purple moor-grass) contrasting with the horizontal and dense flower heads of the herbaceous perennial Achillea filipendulina 'Gold Plate' (yarrow). The grass is a selected form of British native Molinia caerulea with its distinctive purplish brown to black flower stems which turn colour as they age, becoming orange-yellow by late autumn.

This is my 2000 ‘Plant of the Day’ so thank you to all those who have sent messages of encouragement and have supported the blog - keep enjoying the ‘green’.

On the twelfth of February (or thereabouts, as the land agents say) a friend of mine posted a quite spectacular photo of a fire on Dartmoor. Contrasting with the evergreen groundcover planting are the amber-coloured stems of Molinia caerulea (purple moor grass). A British native often found in moist places such as heaths, moors and bogs but it can tolerate drier conditions. This ornamental grass forms clumps, so staying where it is placed in the border, and providing this autumn display. The stems will be flattened to the ground by strong winds or snow in the winter.
