Well I’ll start with this quote ‘Good Artists copy. Great Artists Steal’ said by the famous Pablo Picasso. Although it sounds horrible to agree with this quote, I personally think is true. But more than stealing is getting inspired by the things we see or put them on different contest to give the subject another meaning. Through out time all artists have stealing or using different media to re-contextualize art or images to appropriate them as their own. We can start by saying that Pop art is the most obvious for this re-contextualizing objects/ art. I’ll stat with the famous Roy Lichtenstein where he got his ideas or stole the illustration from comics form the 60’s. If we go farther back will see Picasso getting the ideas or stealing from African Mask. Even if we go to the main ideas of what is Collage; where we get different images to create a new one.
I believe that what is important and make the art different will be the idea behind the piece of art they are using and as long you change something of the art piece I think there is now problem at all. At the same time I think that everything have been done so copying has become much easier to do now than before. Even now with all the media bombarding us all the time and the Globalization that we have now a days.
Talking about the case of the Molotov Man I think is a very complicated this cause the images first was as photograph by Susan Meisales and then the artist Joy Garnett use the image as an painting, which I think is good she completely change the image be changing the whole medium and the cropping of the image. At the same time the image has been use through out so many other people they idea behind has change. And this has been thanks to the Internet that people can grab the image and give the image a new meaning. I believe the copy writes today is so complicated, because as I mention before the Internet and the whole new mediums make it hard to decide if someone has copy or just been inspired be it.
Then again if some one just grabs an image of the internet or from some where and make them it as if they did it with out doing anything or even just giving a completely different meaning to the actual meaning of the peace of art I think is wrong. But it has happen with the Nazi logo been a Buddhist symbol before. But here is the perfect idea of appropriation or even the quote I’ve mention at the begging of Pablo Picasso.
