I was thinking about this today and I realized that Denise Mina was probably trying to do her version of The Fear Machine, with her Empathy Engine. But it fails because it’s not saying anything. It’s as numb and empty as her characters.
Meanwhile, The Fear Machine was weird and freaky and deeply political. Think about the underlying message. It’s about how all these men in power are infecting the world, literally weaponizing fear and the only way we’ll right the world is bringing it to balance by embracing female energy. And it does this by having John have a threesome with 2 exes so they can engender a dragon. Fuck, man, Delano’s brain is something else.

So I’m finally getting around to my MomBox from Influencers! I really liked most of what was in this box. Let’s talk about them all!!! My rating system is out of 5 stars.
#1- Ivory Soap! This is a classic and never fails. My mom was very happy with this. She can’t use many other soaps, since she breaks out from too perfumes in most soaps. It smells just plain clean and washes off easy. I used it on my 4 year old son also and he stated it “Makes my skin feel clean!” **** 4/5
#2- Impress Press on Manicure! I had tried these in a box before and really like them for short uses. They are great if you have nails that hate to grow (like mine). I can run to the store, buy a cute pair and throw them on. They say they last up to a week, but that’s if you do nothing. I lost one; just taking clothes out of the washer then another while I was cleaning up my son’s toys. As a mom, I would imagine we do these kinds of things a lot. So if you are an active mom, I wouldn’t use them as your daily fake nails, but for a night out with the girls and no time to run to the salon (Who does?!) These are perfect! *** 3/5
#3- Quaker Soft Baked Oatmeal Cookie. This one I gave to my son, since I’m not much of a sweets eater. He loved it and asked to get some at the store. They are a quick snack that isn’t super sugary. I love that I can buy the single packaged one. I can grab it and throw it in my purse for when we go out. Since they are soft, they don’t become a bag of crumbs in my purse. ***** 5/5
#4- DenTek Flossers! We actually had some of these, just not the kid ones! My son is just now reaching the age that we are starting to floss. He took to these very quickly. I still have to do it for him since he presses a little too hard and made his gums bleed. So I do wish they were a little looser so a child could push and not make it hurt. Or maybe use a softer floss. *** 3/5
#5- Stash Tea Sampler- Well this is the only one I didn’t like. Manly it’s cause I can’t have 90% of what is in the box. I am allergic to bush berries as well as my son. So I actually had to remove it from the house. (if we so much as tough, we break out. If we eat them… very bad.) But I did give them to a friend and she said they were okay. We are both major tea drinkers, so we might be on the snobby side a little. They are either very sweet or two bitter. I think it all depends on your taste. I do wish that VoxBox would ask about any food allergies in the pre-survey. ** 2/5
#6- Dino Lingo! LOVE IT. This has become our pre bedtime DVD. It makes learning a language fun and entertaining. My son is very interested and I will think about buying the set or a set like it. ***** 5/5
