It's not exactly correct to say that the games like Caligula or Monark are "by ex-Atlus staffers". They're there more as mentors rather than true driving force behind them. Check the interview with the Caligula director, "Den Faminico Gamer interview with The Caligula Effect producer Takuya Yamanaka", on Digi-Lab blog. Caligula is a very low budget, and was intentionally made to appeal to very specific type of people, not mainstream. Satomi helped him turn his ideas into an actual game story.
Ah, you know, the truth is that i mostly blocked these games out of my mind because I knew I'd never play them myself and instead compartmentalized them as by "ex-Atlus staff" just as a memory shorthand. Let's review a few, since they're generally going to be eligible for Digital Devil Spawn:
Mind Zero (2013)
Has nothing to do with any Atlus staff whatsoever.
Oh, this is the one that's a brazen Persona ripoff
That's probably why I got my wires crossed about it.
Streaming Knowledge will be taking a look at this fine gamesoft tomorrow!
Only On PlayStation
Monark (2021)
I often have trouble remembering this game's name
This one's filthy with old Atlus guys like Ryotaro Ito, Kazunari Suzuki, and Tsukasa Masuko
Caligula [Effect] {Overdose} (2016,2017) {2018,2019}
Hm, so the sequel to this is apparently okay, and the nomenclature is a little confusing, but the "Overdose" version is somehow a "remake" of the Vita original (the original release just seems like it was incomplete more than anything)
Written by Tadashi Satomi, music by Tsukasa Masuko
The interview mentioned
I feel like there's maybe one more (that's not like Guns Undarkness or Jewel Summoner), but it's not coming to mind.

I know not everyone with the same last name has to be related, but hear me out!
They're either siblings or cousins; the timeline's making it hard for me to decide.
Under the cut for timeline discussion. Major Monark spoilers, you have been warned.
What are your thoughts on Varlet so far? (Bonus question: if you played it, who was your fave in Monark?)
I really liked Monark, so Varlet is incredibly disappointing. Varlet has no idea what made Monark good and is failing to encapsulate any of that. It doesn't really know what it's doing In monark, the main villains, the pactbearers have different supernatural powers or enhancements due to their contracts with various demons/monarks based on the 7 deadly sins, which are also represented in the player's control over the skeleton vessels they can use.
Several of them have logical setups too! Envy attacks steal, Jealousy has fire spells (burning jealousy), Greed has time and space powers, these can be seen in action on your vessels depending on the vanitas quizzes. And then you get to the pactbearers who use those powers in the plot!
Varlet has the quizzes and some stat points for minor passives, but they don't really serve any purpose besides undercooked protagonist flavor characterization which is undercut by the game itself constantly giving you new backstory that the player doesn't know. Like, I just found out, halfway through, the player had a famous actor older brother, like. Hello? The pacing of each chapter has been pretty bad, and the villains can all just 'hi glitches' for nonsense powers as it demands. There's no follow through or connection for them, which is only exacerbated by the One Battle Theme, and boss themes having limited panache.... what a waste of Oster Project.
Gabriel is obsessed with Marinette because she reminds him of himself and deep down he actually struggles with self-loathing, which he's projecting onto her. He's also seeing Adrien as an extension of Emilie, he molded their son to be the perfection he saw in her and he is afraid that if Adrien gets with Marinette he will end up like Emillie did when she got with Gabi Grassette.
