Monk's Trail

As James continued to recuperate from the bike trip, I set off for the Monk's Trail this morning, also known as the Wat Pha Lat Trail. This relatively short, moderate hike brings you to a temple nestled within Doi Suthep. This temple has no roads or vendors nearby; nothing but nature, the monks who live here, and the odd backpacker. That gives the place a particularly strong spiritual aura I think.

I will admit that some of these moments weren't *quite* as serene as the pictures suggest, because one of the monks was using a leaf blower while I was taking them.

I wonder what kind of farang nonsense necessitated these signs.

It is common for people to leave flowers, coins, and sometimes drinks at the shrines.

By mid-morning, the sun was starting to do what the sun does, and I had already seen the summit of Doi Suthep, so I decided not to finish the trek to the top. Instead I just spent some time meditating- napping, really- near the creek that runs through the temple grounds.

The hike included several communal bird baths. I didn't participate on the way up (what if I needed my water?) but I did on the way back down.

Further up the #monkstrail past #watphalat is the #hidden #trail to #watphrathatdoisuthep a beautifully ornate #temple perched high above #Chiangmai on #doisothep You can get there by roads too apparently. (at Wat Phra That Doi Suthep)

Hiking up monks trail yesterday was breathtaking. We didn't expect to see such a beautiful Buddhist temple at the top, but we did! It's definitely a not to miss when visiting Chiang Mai.
