Today's Gay Movies... Probably shouldn't have ended on Monster Pies, but had no idea of the plot twist before I watched it
So, queer cinema culture is basically watching a movie, getting super into it, then it taking a horrendously depressing turn in the last 30 minutes and YEETing the fuck out of there before you finish in a bad mood, huh?

i watched monster pies, which is an indie australian film from 2013 about two high school boys who do a romeo and juliet retelling with monsters for english class and fall in love, and it's funny bc... in many ways it shouldn't be a very good movie? the dialogue is quite clumsy and awkward and just nothing special - you can pretty much always predict what a character's going to say next; the story is juggling at least like 4 different tragedies in a way that should feel really cheap (and has some weird subplots that just seem piled on to cause more problems without getting meaningful screentime, like one of the boys' female friend being into him and getting jealous, or the adult woman at the video store he works hitting on him?); and the acting from some of the characters is a bit amateurish.
but i dunno, somehow it does end up quite affecting? there's just a general earnestness that prevents the tragedy feeling exploitative or edgy for its own sake, and elevates even awkward dialogue and performances and storytelling that ranges from a bit messy to acceptably perfunctory? and i think the leads' relationship does come across quite genuine and sweet which i guess is the real core of the film so it works. i wonder if im being too soft on it - but it apparently won first place at some queer film festival when it came out so maybe i'm being too harsh?? it does work, somehow
