The thing about 50s sci-fi films is that, on the whole, they are not good, but also every strain of 50s sci-fi has at least one legitimately great film in it. The space opera has Forbidden Planet, the flying saucer picture has The Day The Earth Stood Still, the alien invasion movie has Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and the giant monster movie has, well, Godzilla, but also Them!, the film that set the template for the American atomic monster movie but that stands out for its stark, at times quasi-documentary style and deathly seriousness about being a movie about giant killer ants. At times it's basically a procedural where the killer is a giant ant, with the investigators talking with colorful drunks and grieving widows. Ants are the only other species to wage war...besides man.

And that's before you take into account the descriptions of the exotic new inventions, pizza and meatball sandwiches
