I know your focus is elsewhere and you're not accepting requests; this is kinda more of an "imagine how chaotic it would be, and the potential for gradual softness."

Touch-starved Anaxa, who didn't even realize it until he had someone to hold hands with, or lean against, or... well, anything, really. Who thought he didn't need contact, who didn't actively want or seek it out for a good part of his life, and whose pride doesn't always allow him to verbalize it in a direct manner.

Touch-starved Reader, who does know they are, but is so accustomed to denial and being physically shrugged off that they don't know how to ask even for presence, let alone to be held. Who, whenever someone asks to hug them, says no, because they inevitably start crying each time they're held. Who, when a hand rests on their shoulder, finds that they want to lean into the touch, and reflexively jerks away instead.

Touch-starved Reader who eventually starts to take small, quiet steps. Gently grabbing the hem of Anaxa's sleeve, even if they look away while doing so; linking their pinkies; placing the crown of their head against his back. And for them, these small actions, seemingly insignificant to most, are in actuality significant signs of trust.

Touch-starved Anaxa who begins to say, "come here," not only because he learns his beloved's habits, and not only when they seek it in those understated ways, but for himself as well. Who reaches out—tentatively at first, eventually more certain—and learns to connect in ways he was never inclined to before. And for him, this is a significant sign of trust.

Two touch-starved people who, despite not knowing how to connect at first, learning that skill. Slowly, awkwardly at first, but together.

Hi again 🌔 anon! :) Ahh… I really loved reading this. You always manage to approach things in such a thoughtful and nuanced way, and this idea in particular feels very true to Anaxa.

I agree with you: he is touch-starved, but in a way that isn’t immediately obvious, even to himself.

He’s someone who has spent most of his life oriented toward intellect, purpose, and distance. Not just physically, but emotionally as well. So the absence of touch wouldn’t register to him as something missing in a clear sense… more like an undefined lack. Something he might notice in passing, but never stop long enough to examine.

And then, as you said, there’s also the aspect of self-imposed distance. Whether it’s rooted in loss, in fear, or simply in habit, he’s someone who has learned to exist without relying on that kind of closeness. So even if the need is there, it’s buried under layers of restraint and rationalization.

Which is why your dynamic here works so well.

Because instead of one person naturally guiding the other into that space, you have two people who both… hesitate. Who both want, but don’t quite know how to reach.

And I think that’s where the psychology becomes really interesting.

Touch starvation in stories is often portrayed at the point where the dam has already broken. Where the intensity comes from finally having access to something that was denied for so long. And that’s a valid and powerful angle, of course.

But what you’re describing is the stage before that.

The learning phase.

Where something as small as grabbing a sleeve, linking pinkies, or resting your head against someone carries an immense amount of weight. Not because the action itself is big, but because of what it represents: trust, vulnerability and permission.

And for Anaxa especially, that progression would matter.

Because he’s not someone who would rush into physical closeness. He would observe it, analyze it, adapt to it slowly. But once he understands it (not just intellectually, but personally), it would become something he chooses with intention.

So when he says something like “come here,” it wouldn’t just be him responding to his partner.

It would be him acknowledging his own need.

And that’s a very significant step for someone like him.

I also really like that both sides of this dynamic require growth. That neither of them is “easier” or more naturally inclined. It makes the connection feel more mutual. Like something that’s built rather than simply falling into place.

And yes… by the time they do get to that point of more open affection, there would be that underlying intensity. But it would be shaped by everything that came before. The hesitation. The quiet learning of each other.

Which makes it feel all the more meaningful.

weird middle ground where ive realized im definitely loveless, and occasionally plato repulsed

and i don't like talking to my friends. and im not sure what to do about that.

the solution of just "doing it anyway" cause i feel like im "in too deep" is kind of hell? ive finally found a word why i don't enjoy interacting with people, or value the possibility of developing a relationship with them. and i don't want to do that anymore.

mostly just don't want to have that conversation of "hey! sorry for being distant! i realized why the past five years felt so forced :D"

sorry for not talking about that thing you were obviously enthusiastic about, i genuinely couldn't bring myself to ask. every urge to engage and start conversations kind of vanished! i know why i don't want to do this anymore! uhm! uh! anyway!!

HI so its 3 in the morning and ive just been woken up by, from what i can tell, a Tiny Glowing Triangle that i can only assume is a cookie knocking on my bedroom window trying to talk to my shadow milk and only leaving after an HOUR of getting hissed at, im pretty sure it was trying not to wake me up cos it was talking pretty quietly but maybe if this MOTHERFUCKER doesnt want to do that it should try not being a FUCKING HIGHBEAM, what ever it is shadow milk Really doesnt like it and im inclined to agree with him so im mostly wondering if itll come back because if this thing starts waking me up every night to try and do whatever it was doing i am going to fucking lose it, hold on shadow milk has just Politely requested that i insult the Fuckass Triangle again so (this is the first time hes talked to me, hooray for the bonds of haterism i guess) anyways how do i make it stop coming back if thats a thing thatll happen

As far as I know, there's no way to deter them from Shadow Milks, as they are VERY persistent in trying to give them cookie therapy. I'd recommend investing in sleep masks DX

Calamitous beauty Wei Wuxian becomes Lan-er-furen Wei Wuxian before leaving the Cloud Recesses. Lan Wangji lasted through only 6 private lessons (not Wangji tutoring him, just small class sizes of 3-4 people) before he snapped.

He compliments Wei Wuxian all the time, but he uses compliments that focus on his character/actions! Lan Wangji fell for him when he heard a voice up the path worrying about a shijie who was walking around without a shawl, and Wei Wuxian just keeps being brilliant and caring about people, so Lan Wangji has a lot of fuel for compliments!
