omfgggg I’m so obsessed with ur latest willmack fic would you ever do a directors commentary of it? it’s only the first chapter but it’s so rich with symbolism already x
oh you’ve done something very dangerous (given me an excuse to yap my ass off), so here’s some annotations of the first chapter! I’m going to include a lot of messages between me, @osc-osco-oscah (blue) and @sodaliighter (teal) because they helped a LOT with this.
This goes without saying but I’m going to be making a lot of statements about who Will and Mack are as people, and those are just extrapolations loosely based on what we know about the real guys. It’s real person fiction. I do not know what they’re like in real life, I’m building a character based on videos and articles about them.
for anyone not up to date on willmack lore, this masterlist by @alltimecharlo is extremely extremely helpful.
Video of Mack being asked if he’s going nonverbal (for the life of me i can’t find the clip by itself so you get a tiktok edit)
The windshield story (at about 12:00)
The Rick Celebrini lore (1) (2)
also a quick thing I wanted to add at the end here: obviously some people are going to be turned off by the use of the f slur in this fic and that is completely fair. For what I want to do with this story, though, I think its inclusion is important. Will is not accepting of queer identity. it's something he's gonna have to struggle with a lot. From my notes:
Will is having a bad time of it. His family church is on the "hate the sin love the sinner" side of things, he has an uncle who "used to be gay" but went through some counseling with the pastor and now has a wife and kids. So to Will, being gay is a temptation that people struggle with just like lust or greed. And boy, is he struggling. When he does recognize a Gay Thought, he sits down and meditates/prays about it, and takes a long cold shower when needed. He still refuses to even think the word gay about himself.
Mack is a little better but not by much. He has had sex with a couple of other guys in college. He's basically one of those guys that will hook up with other men but won't actually call himself gay. He's very self-deprecating (not just for the gay thing) and unfocused and anxious. his dad did a real number on his self-worth. He's obsessively codependant with Will, literally couldn't go a day without the guy. He does understand why on some level but he's not quite ready to do anything about it.
Anyways ik this was a lot, I hope you enjoyed! as a reward for getting this far you can have a tiny (mostly non-spoiler-y) snippet of chapter two!
The next morning, Will went to confessional. Told Father Isaiah everything with his cross digging into the flesh of his palm. Swore that he would never touch another man again, recited dozens of Hail Marys until he was crying and choking on the words. When he stepped out of the confessional booth, Father Isaiah patted him on the back and said, “You’ve done the right thing, my child.”
And then he got drafted, and Will took the first flight to San Jose he could get.
i know this is an f1 blog but i wrote hockey fic and thought i'd promote it here too. sneak peak below the cut!
These days, there are only two things Will prays for. He still wears the cross, of course, even if it weighs heavier and heavier by the day. He hasn’t been to church in a while- hasn’t had time, between practice and his adventures with Mack. He isn’t the best Catholic, Will knows. But he tries, and hopefully that counts for something.
The first thing Will prays for is hockey. Before every game. The cross stays under his shirt, but he puts a hand over it, pressing it close to his heart as he tries, in his own clumsy way, to invoke something holy. And when Will is on the ice, half-blinded by blue and white lights, ears ringing, he swears he can almost see God winking down at him.
Maybe it’s blasphemous to think that God would be watching Will specifically. But he knows he’s part of a larger plan. There is a reason that God wants Will to play hockey.
The second thing Will prays for is Mack.
There’s a reason Mack is here, too. There’s a reason Mack is so much better at hockey than Will. Macklin Celebrini is a test. God is telling Will to be patient. To not give into temptations or jealousy. To not stray from the promises he’s made, either at confirmation or whispered in the dark of a confessional booth. And even if Will isn’t the best Catholic, he does his best to listen. The silver cross sits cold against his skin, a reminder of where his loyalties lie.

Dead Leno AU but it's a flashback to when he was alive and cheating on his girlfriend. Also I need you to get on board with the Real Person Fact that Leno had a lisp as a kid and it comes out when he's drunk.
The last time, Leno threw up. That’s the hazard of making out drunk, Will supposes.
Goose ended up hosting the end-of-season party in his apartment ten minutes from campus. There were way too many girls there, most of whom nobody but Ram knew. Within twenty minutes, Gabe had attached himself to some brunette who definitely had a boyfriend. Voter had completely vanished, and Fowls was doing that weird thing where he stood in a corner and closed his eyes to “feel the music” or whatever.
Anyways. Will was having kind of a weird time that night. He already knew what he was going to do. Just, he hadn’t told anyone. It was eating away at him. Gabe had been talking about registration for next year, and. Y’know.
Will definitely drank a bit too much that night. He just wanted to stop thinking. And, y’know, if he happened to fess up, at least he’d get it out of the way. At least alcohol made the knots in his gut loosen a little bit. He could just lean against the kitchen counter and nurse a beer and watch Fowler do… whatever he was doing.
“Look sad, over here,” Ryan said, siddling up next to him. He had a cap on backwards and he was practically vibrating. Leno never exactly sat still, but when he was drunk he was unbearably jittery. Leno put his big hand on top of Will’s head and shook him a little. “Y’alright in there Thmitty?”
Will lazily batted his hand away. “I’m good. You’re good. Everything’s good.”
Leno grinned. “You look funny.”
“You look funny.”
“Nuh uh. I look great.”
“You look stupid. Stupid hat.”
“Ith your hat.”
Will squinted at him. “... when did you take that?”
“Dunno. Couple months ago.”
“Asshole.”
Leno shouldered him, hard. “Pretty thure you have one of my Program hoodies.”
“Yeah, well. Yours is biger, it’s comfortable.”
“Mhm.” He leaned in close, enough that Will could feel Leno’s breath on his ear. “Does it still smell like me?”
Could practically hear the smile in his voice. Sometimes Will hated Leno for how arrogant he could be. He thought everybody loved him.
Just this once, he was right.
Will downed the last of his beer. “You ready to call it?”
“Yeah.” God, he looked so fucking smug.
It was barely ten thirty. Will insisted on saying goodbye to Goose before they left. Told him some story about an early class the next morning. No idea if he bought it. Whatever. Will was just happy to be stumbling through Boston with Ryan, playing with borrowed time. He was going to wait until they got back to Ryan’s single, but. Well, he was wearing that dumb letterman jacket Will got him, and this was when his hair was a bit long and he had just a little bit of a scruff along his jaw. And Will’s always had a thing for brunettes anyways.
They’d barely made it onto campus before Will was grabbing him.
“C’mere,” Will muttered. Got a hand on the back of Leno’s neck. Leno practically fell into it, teeth and lips crashing into each other, but Will couldn’t care less. He just wanted Ryan on him. His big hands pulled at Will’s hair, snuck inside his coat, and God. It wasn’t even that good, Leno basically licking his chin. But fuck, it was so hot. Someone was giggling, and Will couldn’t breathe.
“Shit.” Ryan pulled back suddenly, and the cold seeped back into Will’s mouth. He reached for Ryan, but he was somewhere else- he was ducking his head, trying to crawl inside Will’s jacket. A laugh bubbles up from Will’s throat.
“What are you doing?”
“That girl’s in our class,” Leno hissed.
Will turned around, hands tight on the collar of Leno’s jacket. “What girl?”
“Don’t-!” Leno grabbed him, but Will’d spotted them. Three or four girls, he wasn't seeing straight, wandering along behind them. Will turned to get a better look. They were giggling, looked a little drunk themselves. Oh, yeah, they did know that girl. Mary, or Maddie, maybe? She was in their Econ class. Will had the vague feeling that he should care, but. Leno was there. Leno was warm and nice. Leno was trying to hide his face against Will’s chest.
“So what,” Will sighed. He tried in vain to pull Leno back up. “C’meeeere.”
“I’m pretty sure she knows Tess.”
“Who?”
Leno hit his arm. “Julie’s friend?”
“Oooookay.” Will watched as the girls went by. Marian or Maya or whatever her name was looked back with a smirk. “It’s probably someone else, relax.”
“I’m so beyond fucked.”
“Whatever, you’re a good boyfriend, she won’t care.” Will pulled him in for one more kiss, which Ryan half-heartedly dodged.
“Dude,” Leno groaned, hands dragging down his face. “This is, like. We can’t be doing this. This is strike two for me. Fuck, I’m gonna-”
“Lean, fuckin’ relax, you’re fine-”
Leno stumbled a few steps away, then turned and hurled all over the sidewalk.
More dead Leno au! Specifically about the day he died. This is Gabe's pov, and probably won't be included in the final project but it is canon to this au. Takes place during winter of their sophomore year.
Also before anyone says anything, no I do not know if all these guys were roommates for realsies. I'm playing pretend rn.
“We still on for tomorrow morning?”
“Yeah. I’ll be back in uhhhhhh hour or so.”
Gabe’s already tucked himself into bed, lying on his side as he gazes at his phone. Leno, for his part, seems to be on the couch. His girl is laying on top of him. Usually Gabe would find that kinda gross, but at least he doesn’t have to see the whole thing over facetime. As long as they’re at her apartment, forty-ish minutes outside of Boston proper, they can do as much PDA as they want.
“Oh, fair warning, Cheese is in a bit of a mood.”
“Ughh. Did you see the whole thing with coach today?”
“Yeah, he told me about it,” Gabe sighs.
“What’d he say?”
“Well- you know, he’s all ooohhh coach is just frustrated., he doesn’t mean it, but he’s in a funk.”
Leno scoffs. “Bullshit.”
“It’s Jacob, you know how he is.”
“Yeah. He’ll get over it.”
“He’ll run himself into the ground is what he’ll do,” Gabe grumbles. Leno purses his lips in a very Ryan Leonard way.
“Eh, probably.”
“Should I let you go?”
“Yeahhhh, I should get going.” He pats Julienne on the back as he’s saying it, kisses her on the forehead. “Don’t want to keep you up too late.”
“You’re so gross.”
“Whatever. I’ll be back in a bit. Love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.”
“Yup, see you.”
“Say it back, bitch.”
“Fuck off.”
“Say iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.”
“Love you. Go fuck yourself.” Gabe hangs up before Leno can say something snarky. He doesn’t need to see Ryan and Julienne’s goodbye kisses. That’s the kind of mistake you only make once. He doesn’t wait up to hear Leno come home.
…
By 5:30, Gabe goes to Leno’s door and starts banging. “Come on, man, time to get going.”
No answer. Leno’s not the kind of guy to flake on their morning runs. More often than not, it’s him dragging Gabe out of bed. Of their little eight-man, Leno’s usually one of the first up.
At a certain point Gabe stops knocking and just opens the door. He’s fully expecting Leno to throw something at him. But Leno’s not up. He’s- he’s not even in his bed. The room is empty.
Okay. Maybe he decided last-minute to stay the night with Julienne. But- he would’ve said something. Usually, Leno’s the guy telling everyone text me when you get home.
Gabe checks his phone.
Nothing.
Maybe Gabe’s being paranoid. But it’s just not like him.
Gabe doesn’t bother knocking on Voter’s door. Voter is facedown in bed, still not over that cold. Gabe gives him a good shake.
“Will. Get up.” Voter’s small, so it doesn’t take much effort to turn him onto his back. “Have you heard from Lean?”
“Nghhhhhhhh.”
“Will.”
“What,” Voter grumbles, eyes still closed. Some help he is.
“Where’s your phone?”
“Uuuhhhdunno.”
“Fucking christ.” Gabe starts hunting through his nightstand. Eventually he finds it wedged between the bed and the wall, taps out Voter’s passcode. Nothing from Leno. Nothing from Julienne, either.
“Did you talk to him last night?”
“Who?”
“Ryan.”
“Mgh. Don’t think so. Didn’t he go to Julie’s?”
“Yeah, but he told me he was coming back. He’s not here.”
Voter buries his face in his singular pillow. “Okay? It’s Leno, he’s probably with some other girl.”
Gabe purses his lips. It’s not- he could be. It wouldn’t be the first time. But Gabe just can’t scratch this fucking itch. It’s weird. He would say something, even if it was just a quick staying out.
Gabe pulls out his own phone and hits the call button. It doesn’t go through. Perfect.
He tries three more times just to be sure. Tries from Voter’s phone, too. Nothing. By now, Fowls has gotten up- Gabe’s making a bit of a ruckus, apparently- so Gabe marches over to him.
“Have you heard from Leno?”
Jacob glances up, still squinty-tired. “He’s not in his room?”
“No. He said he was coming home last night, but he didn’t. I can’t get a hold of him.”
“You called his dad?”
Gabe pinches the bridge of his nose. “No. I’ll check, and if he doesn’t know anything I’m calling campus police.”
Fowls pouts around a mouthful of granola. “He’s probably at his girlfriend’s.”
“He was last night, but he told me he was coming home.” Gabe fumbles with his phone for a second, before remembering he doesn’t have John Leonard’s phone number. Voter’s phone, then.
It feels like a billion years before John Leonard picks up. He sounds grumpy. Which is sort of his resting state, from what Gabe can tell.
“Hello?”
“Hi, it’s Gabe. Uh, this is probably nothing, but have you guys heard from Ryan today?”
“Today? Mgh.” he can hear shuffling, probably John getting out of bed. Jesus, it’s barely 6 am. “No, not today. Is everything alright?”
“When was the last time you heard from him?”
“What’s going on? Has something happened?”
“No, just- I don’t know. He’s not in his room, and he told me he was going to come home last night. I don’t know if he maybe decided to drive out…” It’s a ridiculous suggestion. Even Ryan wouldn’t decide to drive to Amherst at midnight when he had class the next day. But maybe, maybe he is that stupid. Wouldn’t that be easy?
“Have you talked to anyone about this?”
“I’m going to call campus police right after this.”
From the other room, Voter calls, "did you take my phone?"
“Alright. Call me when you find him. This is Gabe, right?”
“Yes, sir. I will-”
“Try to relax, right? He’s probably asleep on some stranger’s couch right now.”
Gabe has to stifle a sigh. “Yes, sir.”
“Right. Good man.”
That doesn’t really sit well with Gabe, either. It’s not impossible. But the itch remains.
Gabe makes his way over to the kitchenette, where the number for campus security is listed on a placard.
…
It doesn’t take them long to find him. A third of the way between Boston and Natick, off the side of Pine Street. It’s not even that rural. It’s a nice area. Hit and run, the cops told him, maybe a drunk driver. Impossible to say.
Gabe’s phone cycles through different homescreens. The dogs, the lakes, the Illinois house, Cape Cod. Gabe and Leno and sometimes Will. The program, BC, juniors last year. Picture after picture where Ryan smiles with his whole face. Fourth of July in Lexington. Christmas in Chicago. Parties on Chestnut Hill.
He considers calling Will. Decides against it. Someone else can deal with him.
Julienne and Cindy are hugging a lot, and crying. Alyssa’s driving up from Vermont. Gabe doesn’t say I told you so I told you so I told you so but it keeps ringing in his ears. I fucking knew it. I fucking knew it.
There’s a bin of Ryan’s things. Wallet, jacket, smashed up phone. Julie takes one of his bracelets, John takes his white baseball cap. Someone puts a hand on Gabe’s shoulder, says something he doesn’t hear. He feels sore all over. Like he just ran eight miles with no stops.
“What?”
“You should take something,” Cindy says, soft as a feather. It’s only been ten hours or so, but she looks like she hasn’t slept in days. She gestures to the bin.
“Oh. Um. I wouldn’t want to. Y’know.” Gabe shakes his head. Even his own voice sounds distant.
“Okay,” she nods. “If you change your mind…”
He nods back. “Yeah.”
And then it’s back on Chestnut Hill, and John and John jr. are there, and Fowls watches from the kitchenette, mouth pressed into a flat line. They fold his clothes up into boxes, take down his posters, and all Gabe can think about is how quiet it is. Leno never lets silence sit long.
Underneath the nightstand, Gabe spots a glint of gold. He crouches down and- aw, fuck. It’s Leno’s chain, the one with the cross. He usually wears it everywhere. He’d “lost it” a couple days ago. Of course it would be right there. Gabe blows on it, rubs off whatever dust he can. Ryan wouldn’t want it getting dirty.
Gabe’s not particularly religious. His mother’s a Roman Catholic, his father’s a Baptist, and they raised their kids somewhere in the middle. Gabe stopped going to service around fourteen, and that was alright by them. As far as he’s concerned, God is one big maybe. Maybe there was a burning bush, maybe there was an Eden, maybe God is just an old man who likes to paint sunsets. Who knows.
Ryan, on the other hand, is positively devout. The kind of guy to invoke Mary as he beat some other player to a pulp. He goes to St. Ignatius every Sunday, and even a few extra days when he feels like it. He says it grounds him. It’s probably better for him, now, that he was a believer. Gabe doesn’t remember all the requirements, but-
Yeah. It’s probably better that Leno practiced. Better than whatever alternative there may be.
“Would, um.” Gabe has to clear his throat. Feels like something’s blocking all his airways. He holds the chain up to John jr. “Would it be alright if I kept this?”
John squints at it, then something funny happens with his face. “Lemme ask my dad.”
“Sorry- I shouldn’t have asked-“
“It’s alright, man. Just lemme ask, I don’t know if he wants it.”
John leaves, and Gabe goes back to staring at the cross. He doesn’t even know what he’d do with it.
I’m gonna rewrite this cause there’s simply no way that Colleen Smith would not inform her son about this but uh. Sneak peak at my soul crushing willeno au inspired by these tags. Takes place during Will’s rookie year.
CW for death, car accident
On Thursday, Will gets a stupid reel from Leno and ignores it. He does this shit about once a month. A half-hearted attempt to prove that they’re still friends.
The next Monday, Will sees a headline on instagram: College Hockey Player Killed In Car Accident. And for a second Will is confused, because he’s in the picture, and then it clicks.
It’s Ryan.
For a long time, Will stares at his phone. He’s convinced it’s the Bunion for, like, ten minutes, it’s a mean fucking joke but maybe it’s the kind of shit they pull, he wouldn’t know. But, no. It’s legit. Every sports outlet is reporting on it. Nice pictures of Ryan, school photos, his hockey headshot. Boston College Star Dead At Nineteen. Car Accident Kills Capitals Prospect. Will half-wonders if Ryan was drunk, then wants to hit himself in the head. Fuck.
Will should call someone. He should call- not Gabe, he can’t call Gabe. Alyssa? Does he even have Alyssa’s number?
Voter. Voter will- he’ll know, at least.
The phone rings three times before Voter picks up.
“Hey.”
“Hey. I saw…” he’s sort of hoping Vote will cut him off, tell him it’s all some big bit that the two of them have coordinated. Ryan would fucking do that. Asshole.
“Yeah.”
“Is…?”
“Your mom didn’t tell you?”
“No. I didn’t- I just woke up.”
There’s a loaded silence. He can hear Voter breathing, steady, manual.
not sure if I’m gonna finish writing this but uh here’s Tom Wilson beefing with his boyfriend’s cat.
Tom blinks awake in the dark. He needs to piss bad. He kisses Ryan’s neck, then rolls over to check his phone. 3:42 am. Ugh.
Slowly, Tom extracts himself from bed. He looks around, but he doesn’t see Mouse anywhere. Knowing her, she’ll probably dart out under his feet. Tom stumbles into the bathroom and groans when he flicks the light on. He keeps meaning to replace that light bulb, it’s way too bright and cold.
Tom squints at himself in the mirror. He’s still so sore from practice yesterday. A string of bruises are coming in along his chest- not to mention the huge welt on his hip. He’s gonna give Dewey hell for that tomorrow.
When he’s done, Tom lets the bathroom light setup into the bedroom so he can- oh, fuckin shit.
Ryan’s exactly where Tom left him, drooling onto his pillow. Mouse is sprawled out in Tom’s spot, staring right at him. He hadn’t even heard her bell jingling. What a little shit.
“Okay, kitty,” Tom sighs, trudging over. “Time to go.”
“Mraaaaow.”
“Come on, girl.” Tom pats the edge of the bed. Mouse does not move.
“I don’t wanna have to move you,” Tom warns, “but you’re not exactly helping me here.”
“Mraow.”
“Okay.” Tom reaches to scoop her up. Before he can, Mouse fucking bites. Tom jumps, biting the inside of his cheek. “You are such a little brat,” Tom hisses. He licks the blood off his hand. Ryan is still fast asleep, because of course he is.
Tom grabs a pillow and tries to push Mouse off the mattress. She just rolls over to show her belly. Tom’s not stupid enough to fall for that trap.
Quickly as he can, Tom shoves both hands under Mouse and pulls her up. But she manages to wiggle away and sit right back down.
“I bet you’ll move if I get you a treat, won’t you? Not that I should be rewarding this,” Tom grumbles. “That’s probably what you wanted in the first place, isn’t it? Just annoy me until I feed you.”
Mouse does not reply.
Reluctantly, he makes his way to the kitchen. The second she hears the treat bag crinkling, Mouse comes sprinting out of the room. Of fucking course. Tom hides the treat behind the blender, just to keep her occupied for a bit. And maybe a little bit as revenge.
Finally, Tom gets back into bed and wraps his arms around Ryan’s waist. Ryan makes a cute little hum. His big tongue is on the verge of falling out of his mouth. Tom has to sigh. He really does adore Ryan. He can put up with the cat, as long as he gets to have this.
Pretty soon, Mouse toddles back into the bedroom. She jumps onto Ryan’s side of the bed this time, curling up near his head. She glances at Tom just once before closing her eyes. Whatever.
