as a mixed black person from the american south (who LOVES alastor's connections to the south), i can't help but theorize about why alastor's demon form is so much different than his human form.
i mean other than the fact that vivzie has been working on hazbin for a LONG time now and she probably made alastor's human form WAY after his iniatl creation (i think it; i have my own paracosm).
obviously, alastor lived as a mixed black creole man in 1930s louisiana and for sure faced racial discrimination as a result. rosie even said that he had to overcome to much and still became a successful radio host.
and lets talk about what alastor def had to do as a black man in the 1930s IN THE SOUTH whose job relied on good relations with white people.
for black people (and other poc groups, especially here in the states), even now, you have to act a certain way around certain people to make those people feel safer and better about you.
since alastor worked as a radio host (a host of a show most likely controlled by white men), he would've had to do a lot of codeswitching.
for those who dont know, codeswitching is changing the way you speak for the audience being addressed. in black and poc communities, it is done to make the way we talk more palatable to a white audience or someone who may not understand group specific dialects and slang like AAVE.
which is why i think alastor's perma radio voice when he's a demon-- in addition to being a reference to his past life-- could be one of those things where something they hated about themselves when they were alive becomes a bigger part of themselves in death.
his perma radio voice (not completely permanent since it stopped when his staff was broke at the end of s1) constantly reminds him of how he had act to keep his job when he was alive.
i think of a similar thing with his hair.
i love this scene tho. back to the theory
alastor, when he was alive, is shown to have obviously curly hair. if i had to guess, based off my own hair type, probably 3c.
but as a demon, he has straight hair.
like straight straight hair lmao. (i love this scene too)
now i'm pretty sure this is a leftover from when alastor was first created and i'm sure vivzie wants some separation in appearance from their demon form verus their human form.
but i think that this may be intentional, if my theory is to be beliveed.
given alastor, when he was alive, was constantly putting on a face/not being completely himself-- partly as a result of being black in a white dominated job, being black in the 1930s south, and just the nature of his job-- i think alastor's hair was straighten in death as a result of this.
i don't really think i need to explain just HOW important hair is in the black community but its VERY IMPORTANT. i would be utterly distraught if something happened to my hair that caused it to forever be straight.
but alastor wasn't just black. he was mixed and black. and as someone who's mixed just like alastor (black mom, white dad), it is a whole nother ballpark to be mixed and be black.
while i personally have never dealt with any of this to an extreme, you can get pretty ostracized from both sides. your seen as society as being black but to some within your own community, you aren't seen as being fully black. they point out your half whiteness like its a detriment. it can feel like you don't fit anywhere.
(i feel like im rambling too much, hold on. im writing this when i wanna go to sleep. )
bringing it back to alastor's hair: i think alastors is traightened in his demon form because he could've hated it while he was alive.
too curly for white people. too straight for black people.
i sleep now. sorry if i ended too abruptly and made no sense.
