a knife is taken to the firm surface

butter swells and melts and soaks

of eggs are set on the table

with bacon and ham resting close

like lovers

forks chip against porcelain

orange juice and coffee is poured

a father

rustles his newspaper

children

fuss over eggs

a mother

does not eat
