This is the anime I like most of Masaaki Yuasa's work. I think the expression of the final story is more beautiful than that of the original novel.

News is out that Yoru wa Mijikashi Arukeyo Otome, aka 'The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl', has won the Best Animation Award in the 41st Japan Academy Awards which took place  this weekend on the 2nd of March ^_^

Created by Morimi Tomihiko (Uchouten Kazoku) and directed by Yuasa Masaaki (Ping Pong The Animation, Devilman: Crybaby, Genius Party), this 2017 film follows a black haired girl in Kyoto who every night walks the same route, the man in love with her who attempts to 'accidentally' cross her path, and the crazy incidents they get mixed up in along the way

Uchouten Kazoku (novel)

Finally finished Uchouten Kazoku (the novel), by Morimi Tomihiko.

Visually speaking, I felt like the tanuki spent more time in tanuki form in the book, where they live in the woods by the shrine, whereas in the anime it seemed that they lived in the shrine itself (which was kind of strange, now that I think of it: is it supposed to be a visual metaphor?) Other things that I recall being explained better: the mom of the brothers is a huge Takarazuka fan (so she transforms into a princely character, as in the pool hall scene), Soun collects netsuke, and Kaisei transformed into one of them, which he took along with him when he betrayed his brother (so that is why Kaisei knows the whole story). Also, I think I felt more sorry for Akadama-sensei in the novel, because Yasaburou explains his emotions more. (We also find out he had a son who he fought with, and who went to live in England).

Anyway, one advantage of the novel is that it gives you the time to really soak in the language. You do get a lot of it in the dialogue in the anime, but I feel it loses a lot of the flavor in translation (which is not to say that it was a bad translation, just something that couldn't be helped). I can't really explain what makes it special, but maybe it's the usage of archaic expressions? The type of vocab used? (Also reading gives you more time to appreciate verbal stuff like the Ebisugawa twin's improper usage of four-character phrases.)

In terms of genre, this is at heart a novel about a family (yes, huge surprise) but it's also a fantasy novel: I think perhaps the style and the very concrete usage of the setting (Kyoto) and specific places makes it akin to magical realism. The worldbuilding is not explained: Tanuki and tengu just are, and the mechanics aren't dwelt on. It's pretty impressive, when you think about it, how matter-of-fact the story is, despite the outlandish events and abilities of the characters. (If anything, I feel it's the 'other side' of the Japanese fairy tale. Think of how Yodogawa-sensei would perceive the events, for example.)
