Explosive aromatics of peach, apricot, passionfruit, pineapple, and savory spice erupted from my glass with the first pour! The color was 24-karat gold. And the palate was even more explosive and rich! Despite weighing in at a mere 8.5% ABV, the 2010 Selbach-Oster Zeltlinger Sonnenuhr "Rotlay" Riesling punched my palate with astonishing intensity, tension and a fierce, racy acidity that was beautifully balanced by an appropriate amount of residual sugar. The mouthfeel was creamy and luxurious and the finish incredibly long and complex. Fortunately, this was only my first bottle as this remarkable wine will only continue to improve for decades! . Whenever I drink a quality Riesling, I'm reminded of Jancis Robinson's famous quote about Riesling: "Unbeatable quality; indisputably aristocratic and ludicrously unfashionable." Fortunately for (open-minded) consumers, this means that high quality Riesling, like this Selbach-Oster, is available for prices that are incredibly reasonable. . In my previously-recorded IGTV video (available in my feed), I explain that there are excellent dry Riesling options for those who do not like sweet wines. Today, however, I'm embracing the sweetness! German Riesling with some residual sugar (such as Kabinett or Spatlese from the Mosel region) pairs incredibly well with spicy foods such as @Foodieandwinelover's shrimp with chili peppers (pic 2), Thai and Indian food, and Mexican cuisine! This is so because the sweetness serves as a perfect foil for the heat. And while heat often intensifies alcohol, since the ABV is so low already, that is not an issue for these Mosel Rieslings. The abundant acidity also makes this wine incredibly refreshing. . Had an amazing experience today. I got the chance to help out a local wine farmer harvest some grapes and process them for wine. Essen auf Rädern mit Freunden. Der Gastgeber ‚öffnet‘ seinen Weinkeller und sucht passende Weine aus und die drei geladenen Pärchen kümmern sich um je einen Speisegang und bringen den mit. Es war wieder super: tolle Stimmung, geniales Essen, super Weine.
