❛ Yeah, ❜ he nodded, caution painting itself distinctly on his face as he pointed his wand towards the source of the noise. He was reluctant to move, but took a brief step forward anyway, eyes squinting as he tried hard to see through the thick bushes hiding the random crack —— as silly as it was, since they had been at the Burrow for a while now. But Ron didn’t think it was silly. His home, though still heavily guarded with magic even after the war had ended, felt hardly safe after all they had been through. It was as if a Death Eater was bound to jump out of the bush, as if they were still living in that tent, and just then —— just then a gnome emerged from the leaves and ran straight for his hole.
Ron huffed. ❛ ’s just a bloody gnome, ❜ he said quietly, gaze finally shifting to send Hermione a careful look, hand reaching towards her hand, trying to reassure her with a gentle squeeze. ❛ We should probably get back inside before it gets too dark, y’know. ❜
Her pulse skittered like a cornered animal, irrational fear consuming levelheadedness she so often prided herself on. This time was a trick. Her mind conjured up Death Eaters, nightmares that gnawed restlessly on her bones spinning something harmless into bloody smiles and spindly claws. Next time, Hermione feared she may not be so lucky. She’d read countless books about the First Wizarding War. She’d seen Neville’s parents, glassy-eyed and slack-jawed. The war may have been over, but it continued to tear mercilessly at her attempts to be at peace.
“Just a gnome.” She attempted a relieved smile, but she wasn’t sure it was entirely convincing to either herself or Ron. Even at the Burrow, a honey-gold place nestled fondly in a corner of her heart, she couldn’t seem to let go of the feeling of something watching. Hermione pursed her lips, swallowing nervously as she laced her fingers between his. “You’re right, we should head back.” A sideways glance, then: “Do you think Harry will be home yet, or is he still... Is he still visiting Lupin and Tonks?”
