Keep Mum | closed

Fitz set the new monolith reconstruction simulation running and leaned back in his seat. Stretching his arms up, he dropped them defeatedly back down on the plastic chair arms with a resounding slap. He swiveled around to look at Jemma’s empty workstation that he’d kept so well-preserved for her while she was gone. He was glad she still wasn’t back up to working in the lab yet. It was easier this way, he decided. Having to look at her all day would only make the turmoil churning inside him play up more. And that’s the last thing he needed.
Behind him, his phone rang. Turning back to it vibrating noisily on his desk, he saw the screen displaying “Mum”. He darted a guilty look about the lab—which he’d known was empty—and then declined the call. There were nine other such rejected calls in the last week as well. He felt horribly about it but he knew she’d hear the upset in his voice and question him. He didn’t think he was ready to speak about any of it yet. Even the simple act of pretending a better attitude seemed nearly impossible at the moment.
He heard the lab door creak open and he stiffened instantly. Thinking it must be Jemma, he turned slowly in his seat, only to find—
“Mum?”
