I have mentioned a few times how the Groot 2015 miniseries is one of my all time favourite depictions of Groot as a character in any marvel media. So if you haven’t read it, can’t find a copy for yourself, or aren’t into reading comics, I highly recommend the motion comic adaptation by Joey Sourlis. The voice acting is great and you could tell a lot of love went into it overall. Criminally underrated, much like the comic it adapts.

DC’s latest animated film is an adaptation of a popular Elseworlds story. It may not be faithful to the original comic book miniseries but is a good film with some technical faults.

Superman: Red Son is an alternate universe story originally written as a comic book in 2003 by Mark Millar, the creator of Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service (among other comics). It centers around a variation of Superman where he crash-landed into the Soviet Union instead of Smallville. Using his powers, he eventually takes over the Soviet Union. Meanwhile, Lex Luthor does everything possible to take down Superman.
The original miniseries has been regularly referenced in multiple comics and adapted both in video games and other media. Certain elements were used for a story arc in the fourth season of The CW’s Supergirl. The comic was first fully adapted as a series of motion comic shorts in 2009. Jim Meskimen, who voiced multiple characters in the shorts, even returned for this animated film but in a different role.
The film itself is good. Like Batman: Hush, it is not a faithful adaptation of the original comics.
Several characters either have their involvement toned down or are completely omitted from the film. Pyotr Roslov played a bigger role in the comic and heavily implied to have killed the unnamed Russian Batman’s parents. He is nowhere to be seen in the film, with his major part being transferred over to Lex. Svetlana, based on Lana Lang, still plays a major role in motivating Superman but is killed off earlier than in the comic. Even Stalin’s role is reduced to being a minor antagonist quickly killed off by Superman.
Certain famous moments are recreated with the original comic dialogue, but the film alters their respective contexts and settings. The fight between Superman and Superior Man (Superman 2 in the comic) takes place in an empty, snowy tundra instead of a populated London. Additionally, whereas the clone was mute in the comic, he is presented in the film as a loudmouth who boasts about being American and at one point references the controversial phrase “America First”.
The film’s least altered moment is the confrontation between Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The only major change made was of Lex being the one behind the lights instead of Pyotr.
Other alterations included the addition of a prologue with Svetlana and a young Superman, Star Labs replaced with the Luthor Corporation, and Jimmy Olsen being African American (similar to his portrayal in the aforementioned Supergirl).
The ending is where most fans are disappointed with the film. Instead of ending with Luthor eventually taking over Earth like in the comic, it ends with him resigning and making Olsen President. It also omits the epilogue which reveals Superman was a descendant of Luthor sent from the future after Earth is destroyed in a way reminiscent of Krypton.
Within the comic, it is a bizarre ending which creates not only a time paradox but also a plot hole involving the red sun lights since he is technically human and not an alien. The film never reveals where he came from, leaving viewers to assume it was Krypton as per usual.
The animation is weirdly inconsistent for a DC animated film. The action pieces have great animation, but there are moments where the characters’ only movements are of their lips as if they came out of a bad 80s show. Certain scenes have animation errors, such as the fake Batman appearing a second before the cape is removed. It also appears to recycle character designs from past films. Superior Man, for example, looks reminiscent of Ultraman from Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths.
One major positive which makes the film worth watching is the voice acting. Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) does a great job as Superman, portraying him as someone who wants to follow the communist way but at the same time refuse to let anyone die like his regular counterpart. Diedrich Bader is really good as Lex Luthor, even though he mostly sounds like a laid back Batman.
Superman: Red Son is a good adaptation of the miniseries. While it does retain several of the comic’s memorable moments, a majority of the original plot is either condensed or outright omitted for it to fit within a running time of 82 minutes. The animation is shockingly inconsistent, but the voice acting stands out and saves the film from being unwatchable.
Before I make a recommendation, I should again note the aforementioned motion comic series. It is a word-for-word adaptation of the miniseries, using the original artwork and dialogue. It is relatively short, the animation is very limited, and the voice acting is at best mediocre due to only five voice actors playing all of the roles. It is worth watching just to compare both adaptations.
I can only recommend this film if you’re a fan of either Mark Millar, the original miniseries, or Superman. For everyone else, wait to see it until it is available to stream or on sale.
