The anchorline of medieval defence This is the Anchorsmiths’ Tower (Baszta Kotwiczników) in Gdańsk to the left, the first of the hurdle of classic buldingfronts. It was built back in 1361CE as a defence tower in the first city borderwall. The channel in front is the reminisence of the old moath. It is going down to the Motława River past the entry gates to the old town center and the landmark old crane. Already at the end of the medieval times, the city was growing past this limit, and in 1575CE Anchorsmiths’ Tower was built into a prison for dangerous criminals. Most of the buildings here was damaged and destroyed by war in the spring of 1945. The tower was reconstructed by the end of the 1960s. From the mid-70s it had public offices working with the preservation of historic Gdansk.
