Amidst all the pics of the beach, thought it might be prudent to share some of the details that make the trip possible— namely, the working machine that's carting us around! And here's a link to a mashup of the helmet cam video we captured during the trip: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HHpPK4VSTBiNn1ED7a1agajMd7US1R6j/view?usp=sharing ------ Suzuki V-Strom 650 2004, with custom side panniers approx. 670lbs "wet" with single rider / 900lbs loaded with 2 riders average fuel 43mpg / high 53mpg / low 33mpg top speed loaded 95mph rpm at 80mph 6000 ------ Consistent Maintenance: oil the chain once every 300 miles or after rain clean chain w WD-40 every week check oil level daily and top up clean front windshield, visors, glasses ------ 7/8: front sprocket retaining nut loses; towed to & fixed at Motion Plus, Harriman, TN 7/16: new rear tire: michelin anakee III + oil change (shell rotella t6) + filter; Plano TX 7/22: first noticed electrical probs entering Mazatlan, after mountain ride-- used zip tie to tighten connectors 7/27: swing arm chain adjuster loose and bolt bent; Arturo found us on the side of the road and looked out for us Tenacatita 7/28: clutch not working properly-- had to be adjusted by Spencer in Manzanillo, Colima 7/29: horn connections tightened; also with Spencer in Manz. 8/8: rear break pads worn down-- jerry-rigged "pasta" applied in Tuxla, Chiapas, works fine but squeaks a bit 8/21: starter button not working / clutch lever switch cleaned with WD-40, working again; Mérida, Yucatán ------ Various other small items loose, fixed with duct tape and/or zip ties: • left front blinker light duct taped • left front mirror duct taped but still out of place • windshield bolts replaced • iPhone holder pads missing, duct tape used as padding • chain cover zip tied • front wheel bolts duct taped/zip tied in place - brake lines zip tied to front fork, missing bolt ------ Scheduled maintenance: oil change / filter change mexico city rear brake pad change mexico city front brake pads dallas? new tires dallas? chain dallas?
