Honestly, I’m rather tired of cynical and morally dubious “heroes”, that have little separating them from the villains. Works like The Boys and every other Watchmen knock off comes to mind, which honestly are just meant to shock and disgust, rather attempt at some nuanced story telling.
But honestly, it seems the comic industry ( even beyond that ) is drowning with anti-hero after anti-hero. A never-ending production line of cynical and depressing characters, who fall flat under any critical analysis. Maybe that was fresh back in the 1990s and early 2000s, but now it’s overdone and overused.
Maybe, it is because I prefer the heroes from the pulp age. Stuff like The Phantom, Solomon Kane and Doc Savage, who were interesting but morally solid. I’m not advocate for a revolving door of Hopalong Cassidy, but it would be nice having traditional heroes who actually do heroic things.
It would be nice just to have heroes again.
Maybe that’s too bright and optimistic for most writers in the comic industry. Then again, I don’t think too highly of those people. I wouldn’t even trust them to write jokes on bubble gum wrappers.
I would say though, you can have flawed characters who are heroes. It's possible. But I'm tired cynical and nihilistic anti-"heroes".
I think this video from Implicitly Pretentious helps illustrate my point.
