Mrs. Warren’s Profession
This book was very taboo at its time of publication, not only because it was based on prostitution, but because the main character, Mrs. Warren wanted to be a part of that life, she enjoyed it, and she did not regret it. At the time the idea of a woman being in the prostitution field was if she was desperate and once she was back on her feet, as long as she knew what she did was wrong and she was sorry then it was okay. The problem here was not once did Mrs. Warren apologize for what she was doing. This rubbed people the wrong way, especially men.
Mrs. Warren, a New Woman
This play was problematic because prostitutes were supposed to die in the end and be regretful of their actions. Prostitution was taboo, however it was in many plays at this time. The difference in this play is that Mrs. Warren never apologized for anything she did, she did not believe she did anything wrong. She also did not die in the end. This was part of the New Woman. This was the fear that gender roles would reverse because women were just starting to fight for their rights. This was starting to be a big issue at the time. This play probably scared men because this play was made for women and women were seeing this play. I know if I was a man in this time I would be scared of women seeing this play and wanting to be independent or more like men. Men did not think women should have seen this play since the topic of prostitution was too harsh for women. However there had to have been this scared feeling in the back of their minds when they realized that the New Woman was starting and it could be any of their mothers, wives, or sisters.
111 years ago today, in 1905, George Bernard Shaw's play Mrs. Warren's Profession premiered in NYC. It was shut down after one performance on charges of indecency (it's about a mother who works as a prostitute in order to give her daughter a better life but her daughter isn't sure she can forgive her when she finds out). In 2010, one of the very first custom orders for our book jackets was for the set design of Mrs. Warren's Profession return to Broadway. It lasted a few weeks longer than the original but closed after 2 months. -------- George Bernard Shaw went on to win the Nobel Prize for Literature and wrote a number of brilliant plays. We've gone on to do a lot of interesting things with books including some more set design work for shows like The Mindy Project! Not sure where I'm going with this, but I'm grateful for our "big" break on Broadway 6 years ago and every order we've received since then! Thank you! #broadway #setdesign #mrswarrensprofession #georgebernardshaw #books #customjackets #juniperbooks
