au school nurse!dana evans x single mom!reader hcs
a/n: my thinking has spawned into hcs, again ignore me. there's so much happening in my head with this one.
when dana’s shift ends, she’s torn. not fully committed to returning ut not completely sold on retiring. after 30 years, the things that made this job feel possible and worth it, weren’t having the same push as they did in the beginning. the ache in her nose grounds her all the way home and kept her from emoting too harshly when benji complained when she brought up the idea of retiring.
she returns to the ED for one more shift before she fully decides to give it up. she plans to leave quietly, but robby and the others aren’t gonna let that happen. there’s cupcakes in the break room on her last official day (not her favorite kind of dessert but it’s the thought that counts, right?) and princess anxiously confides in her at the end of the shift that she was actually considering the charge nurse position. dana’s shocked but happy to know someone capable might be able to wrangle this hoard of doctors and nurses during the day. she left finally believing that ptmc would run without her.
the retirement was good at first. it was hard but good. she committed to giving up cigarettes. the job had built a habit and without the job– it was just a habit. she read more. tried her hand at the overgrown garden beds in her yard. binged a little tv. visited her daughters…and decided she didn’t want to be married to benji anymore.
without her job, they had so much time to spend together. and in those moments that should’ve been blissfully sweet, homey, and relaxing– benji decided it was time to air out all of his grievances for the past 30 years. not an ideal situation. not one she wanted to spend the rest of her retired life in. and in the air of letting things go, she decided to let him go.
this is where things can change depending on your vibes – abbott crossover - or not
after the divorce, dana decides to leave pittsburgh for philadelphia. both of her daughter had settled there within the last three years and she thought it’d be the easiest way to separate her from the hospital and also benji and her entire life to that point. she’s able to settle relatively easily in a nice row house not fully in the city but close to her daughters. she has dinner with her girls once a week, finds an adult ballet class to join (i also have a running fic idea about this as well lol), she really adjusts to life without a husband and without the hustle and bustle of the ED.
then she gets bored. and she sees a posting for a part-time school nurse position at an elementary school in the city. there’s not much of a formal interview and suddenly she’s at the school 3 days out of the week.
it starts pretty simply. the office was a mess and she kind of loved that because it gave her something to fix. once she had the office looking better, she took a look at the systems in place, obviously ancient and not at all to her standards. another fix and she was more than comfortable in the now new and improved nurses office.
when the students heard about the new nurse, they thought they could take it as an opportunity to get out of class. well that was pretty short-lived after dana had scared that thought out of the first group that stumbled down feeling sick to their stomachs. she could see right through them and it also didn’t help that they’d said something about a pop quiz in their class. from there she garnered a reputation similar to the one she’d left at ptmc. no nonsense and efficient.
and that was pretty consistent amongst all the staff and students alike, except for this adorable little first grader who had somehow wormed her way past dana’s toughness. the first time she’d met her was when her teacher had brought her down crying (snot and all) over a papercut. dana managed to clean her up and give her bandaid pretty quickly but the crying hadn’t ceased. after finally getting the girl to take a deep breath, she asked for a hug. said her mom always gave her a hug to make her stop crying. and who was dana to deny her sweet face. from then on they were buddies.
any time her class passed the nurses office, she’d step out of line just to pop into the office with a grin. run to squeeze dana’s leg in a hug before her teacher noticed she was missing. favoritism wasn’t something dana wanted to carry into this job but she had to admit, she’d gone soft for the girl.
she first makes contact with you when your kid comes in with her front tooth in hand and tears streaming down her face. by now her teacher knows dana’s got a soft spot for her and leaves her in the nurses care. dana’s quick to pull the girl into her lap with a pointed look and a soft voice. “hey hey hey, you know i can’t make anything better if you don’t tell me what’s wrong. and i can’t understand you if you’re crying.” they end up popping the tooth in a little tooth shaped necklace and drying her cheeks. and dana is ready to send her back to class when she asks her to call her mom first.
dana obliges and is met with one of the smoothest voices she’s ever heard over the line. it’s obviously not native to any part of pennsylvania but it’s easily her new favorite sound. she’s temporarily distracted but pulls herself together at the worry that crawls into your voice + your daughter tugging at her scrub top– wanting the phone.
“uh yeah, sorry bout that. this is nurse evans down at the school. is this…” she peaks over her glasses to the computer screen. “mrs. y/ln?”
before dana can really explain your daughter is climbing into her lap impatiently and leaning into the phone to share her news. and the relieved laugh you let out just about sends dana spinning in her chair.
and it can neither confirmed or denied that she starts adding part phone calls to her system a bit more when it comes to your kid.
tw: mentions of illness, injuries, blood, and puking.
a/n: did not anticipate anyone being into this universe. but here’s some more for those who enjoyed the hcs :)
1. tooth fairy time
Y/n always kept her phone on vibrate and in her pocket while she taught. Just in case of emergencies. The move to Philly had been a good idea— a fresh start, more money, and a fully funded english department to teach in. But it had also been an isolating move. They’d moved miles away from all of her friends and family, and hadn’t really had the chance to rebuild their community yet. So when the phone started vibrating in the middle of her lecture, her heart instantly dropped. The class of freshman’s eyes hadn’t glazed over just yet but she could see they were close and the vibrating seemed to be their saving grace. She pulled the phone out of her pocket to check the ID and called out the room as she headed toward the door.
“Listen guys, I’ve gotta take this. So let’s take a quick break. We’ll resume the slides as soon as I’m done.” She answered the call before she even stepped out and leaned against the wall. “Hi! Sorry about that.” She was met with silence and she pulled the phone away from her ear to see if she’d missed the call completely but saw they line still connected. “Hello?” She held the ‘o’ in question. And that seemed to prompt a response from the other end of the line.
“Uh, yeah. Sorry bout that.” Oh, now that’s an accent. “This is Nurse Evans at the school. Is this Mrs. Y/LN?” Y/n’s brows furrowed in confusion (and a bit of panic) but tried to keep her voice steady.
“Ms. Y/ln, yes. Is everything okay? Has something happened with-“
“Mama, mama, mama.” It’d been whispered in that quietly respectful way she’d been teacher her daughter to interrupt. And her heart melted a bit at hearing her voice. Her not sick or injured voice.
“Hi sweetness. What’re you doing in the nurses office?”
“My tooth came out. We put it in a necklace.” Her voice became clearer, as if being put on speaker phone. “And you have to tell the tooth fairy so I can get money.”
A relieved laugh bubbled up from Y/n’s chest and she smiled. Her heart slowed back to normal and she leaned against the wall. “Is that so? Well did you tell Nurse Evans ‘thank you’ for helping you today?”
The small gasp that filtered down the line answers her question more than anything else. And she chuckles a bit when she hears the hurried gratitude. “Good job, sweet. Are you doing alright, outside of the missing tooth?”
“Yes ma’am, Nurse Evans gave me a hug. So I’m perfect.” Y/n’s heart warmed knowing her daughter had been able to share their routine with someone outside of their small family. And even more that it had been honored.
“Well isn’t that nice. Thank you Nurse Evans, I really appreciate that.” She waited to hear the warm, smokey voice again.
“You’re welcome, Ms. Y/ln. Glad I could be of service.” She’d emphasized the correction and Y/n definitely caught it.
2. skinned knee
“Can we call my mama again?” She’d limped down to the office rather dramatically and Dana tried hard not to roll her eyes.
“What’ve you done now?” She asked as she lifted the girl onto the end of the cot in the room. There was blood running down her leg being held by a makeshift bandage of tissue and tape. “What an innovative way to cover a wound…” She drawled looking up at the sheepish teacher. She’d learned not to expect much from the teachers but it felt rather reminiscent to the ED when she was able to scold someone for their crap job. When the young woman shrugged, Dana waved her off with a sigh. “Don’t worry bout her, I’ll get her back to class.”
She turned back on the little girl with a pointed look, “I thought we agreed you’d be super careful today. What happened here?”
The first grader grinned up at Dana before launching into a rather dramatic retelling of a harrowing fall on the playground. “And I didn’t even cry that much.”
“Well I’m glad you survived. And didn’t even cry that much.” Dana chuckled getting to work cleaning the skinned knee as gently and efficiently as possible. “and why do you want to call your mom?”
“Because I miss her. And you’re the only one that’ll let me call her.” She pouted almost instantly. Lip practically level with her chin. And Dana hates to say it, but it was working on her. She narrowed her eyes pointedly.
“And I wonder why that is…” She turned to pull some disinfectant wipes over to the bed. “Isn’t your mom at work?”
“Well yeah, but she’s a big people teacher so they can entertain themselves.” She fumbled through the words but the confidence behind it made it clear what she meant.
“A big people teacher? Like the kids upstairs?”
“No, bigger than that. Not as big as you though.”
Dana scoffed with a (extremely soft) frown, “How big do you think I am, Missy?”
She tapped her chin very seriously in thought, “Like between 30 and 100.”
“Right…” Dana laughed and finished her work with a bright pink bandaid— the ones she made sure she had in stock after the girl had complimented them. “Well I guess we should let her know that you hurt yourself.”
The little girl grinned and whooped in victory, extending her arms to be shifted into Dana’s lap. Dana obliged and rolled the two of them over to the phone and dialed on speaker phone.
This time Ms. Y/ln answered a lot faster. And she sounded far less stressed. “Nurse Dana, what has my adorably sweet and clumsy child done to herself today?” Dana involuntarily warmed at the slight tease in Ms. Y/ln’s voice.
“We’ve got a skinned knee and a harrowing story of a playground stumble.”
“I can’t say I’m surprised. She’s got it honest— I’m just as clumsy.” The professor laughed softly. “But I’m sure she’s got a much nicer nurse taking care of her than I had in school.”
Dana’s cheeks heated instantly.
3. tummy aches
Dana was starting to develop a sixth sense at this point. Her back was to the door and the usual shuffle of sparkly flats hadn’t sounded but when she turned she wasn’t surprised to see her sweet friend standing in the doorway of the nurses office with a pout. It was just after lunch and she knew by now that her class went to recess during this time. “No recess for you today?”
She shook her head and dragged her feet across the worn tile to stand at Dana’s side. “My tummy hurts.”
Dana hummed and looked the little girl over. Checked for fever or any of the signs of a messier problem. And at no sign of any pressing symptoms she smoothed the girl’s hair back with a smile. “what’d ya have for lunch?”
“Rakai traded me his candy for my spaghetti.” The girl had no shame.
“Right, and does your mom normally let you only eat candy for lunch?” Dana asked, leading her over to the cot.
“Never.”
“Well now you know why. You get tummy aches! But the easiest way to get rid of them is to close your eyes for a bit.”
“But I’m not sleepy.” Argued just as any first grader would.
“Well then just rest your eyes for me, huh? And once you’re feeling better, we’ll go back to your class.” That seems to do the trick and as the officer quieted once again, Dana grabbed the phone to dial a number she was embarrassed to say was started to look familiar.
4. puking
She reaches Y/n’s voicemail the one time she actually needs to speak to her. Ivy’s teacher had brought her down clutching a trash can and green in the face. The bug had been going around the school for days and she’d hoped it might skip her first grade buddy, but it seemed luck was not on her side.
“Hi, this is Nurse Evans down at the school. It seems Ivy’s caught the stomach bug working its way through the school and she’ll need to be picked up. If you could give me a call back as soon as possible that’d be great thanks.”
There was no one else listed on the child’s file so all she could do was wait now. But that only seemed to heighten her awareness of the situation.
Ivy was sick and needed to be picked up and from what she could see, only one person was allowed to do that. One person who just happened to have one of the most alluring voices in all of Philly.
a/n: if you’ve got any requests for this universe let me know. i’ve got a couple ideas myself but im open to suggestions:)
Dana had Ivy’s beaded pigtails pulled behind her head and was rubbing her back soothingly when Y/n rushed into the office. She’d bypassed the return call and dismissed her class as quickly as possible before hightailing it over to the school. They’d been in a rush that morning and Ivy hadn’t been moving the fastest but Y/n had believed her that morning when she said she was fine. She knocked on the door to announce her presence and stepped forward to hold the trash can steady for her daughter.
Dana doesn’t really register the knock or the movement in the room until Y/n is bent at the knee in front of her, trying to coax the girl through a dry heave. And if the voice weren’t enough, the sight of the woman in front of her had definitely done it. She’d been imagining the face behind the voice for months now, but there was no way she’d be able to conjure anything close to the beauty of reality.
“I’m so sorry, she said she was fine this morning. Almost demanding to go to school.” Y/n apologized as she ran a hand over Ivy’s forehead. The little girl finally surfaced from the trash can with a pouted bottom lip and tears in her eyes. “Oh Ivy Lynn, Mama’s not mad. You just have to tell me when you’re not feeling good, sweet. That way I can take care of you.”
“But I love school,” She moaned as she tried to keep the tears at bay. Probably a combination of discomfort and exhaustion at this point. She leaned back into Dana’s side as if to prove her point. And before she could continue her reasoning, Dana squeezed her side with a pointed look. “Your mom’s right kid. We’ll still be here when you come back.”
“You’re only here part of the time.” Ivy argued weakly. Dana was starting to regret explaining her schedule to the girl pretty quickly now.
“You’re too smart for your own good.” Dana grinned. She looked up at the color-coded calendar she updated every month. “What color days am I normally here?” Dana asked pointing to the calendar patiently.
“Pink, because it’s my favorite color. And blue you’re at home.” Ivy stated matter of factly.
“That’s right. So since you threw up, you’ll have to miss school for at least one day. Which will be a blue day, so we’ll both be home.” That seemed to appeal to Ivy, so she continued. “And if you go home and are really good for your mom— doing everything she tells you— I’m sure you’ll be back on the next pink day.”
An agreeable Ivy was a good sign. And somehow the Nurse she’d only met a month ago was responsible for it. Y/n couldn’t be too surprised considering she’d heard a lot about the woman and spent quite a bit of time on the phone with her. Still seeing it with her own eyes was different.
The harsh consonants on the phone held strong in the nurse before her but there was something undeniably soft about the way she’d been holding Y/n’s daughter this whole time. Something tender in the way she talked to her. Never placating but affirming in her feelings. Y/n couldn’t ignore it.
“Thank you,“ Y/n spoke, eyes trained on the older woman’s. “I feel like i’ve heard about you and talk to you on the phone so much this school year but this is the first time seeing you in action. and i really appreciate it.”
Dana huffed out a small breath, like she didn’t quite know what to do with that.
“Well,” she muttered, reaching for a wipe to clean Ivy’s mouth, “I’d say you’re catchin’ me on one of my more glamorous days.”
That earns her a soft laugh. And God that laugh. It settles somewhere low in Dana’s chest before she can stop it. Ivy shifts again, clearly done with the worst of it, and reaches for her mom with grabby hands. Y/n doesn’t hesitate, easing her away from Dana’s side and into her arms.
“Well,” Dana clears her throat, pushing off the cot and giving herself something to do. “She’ll need to stay home tomorrow. Fluids, rest, bland foods if she can keep ‘em down. If she throws up again tonight, just monitor it. If it gets worse—”
“I call you?” Y/n teases lightly, one brow raised. Dana pauses. Just for a second.
Then she lets out a quiet, almost amused scoff. “That’s a little outside my jurisdiction, Ms. Y/ln.” There it is again. That Ms. Y/ln.
Y/n smiles like she’s clocked it every single time. “Y/n,” she corrects gently.
Dana meets her eyes this time. Fully. It’s a mistake. Or maybe it isn’t.
Because now she’s got a face to picture over the phone. the warmth, the humor, the steadiness—all of it is Y/n. and it clicks into place in a way that feels dangerously optimistic.
a/n: i feel hot rn and no one understands. but i just KNOW my fictional fbi girlfriends would understand. short and mainly texts :)
y/n ran her hands through her newly styled hair. with jj and emily off fighting crime, she took the opportunity to do a bit of pampering. obsessed was an understatement and she figured her girlfriends could do with a bit of pictures mail.

y/n: picture mail for my favorite crime fighters 💌
she sent the photos with a knowing smirk and put her phone away to continue running her errands for the day. she usually ran her appointments and things by both jj and emily. she’d even convinced them to start a joint google calendar so they could keep up with each other even if they were traveling. but she’d kept this appointment a secret and had gone for a very very different look than her usual.
it wasn’t until she returned to her apartment that her phone started buzzing repeatedly. she was putting her laundry away but at the sound of the notifications, she grabbed her phone to see what the commotion was.

emmy love: yeah no, it most definitely won’t.
y/n rolled her eyes with a smile and shot a text over to her stylist requesting another appointment to fix whatever damage jj and emily were planning to do. her stylist sent back a hoard of laughing emojis and a cheeky call to y/n getting the exact response she was looking for. picture mail was definitely going to be a regular thing.
summary: emily gets a surprise visitor in the bullpen on monday morning.
a/n: crack idea i got driving past my neighbors house.
monday morning— bright and early. the bau team was finally back from a two week stent of back to back cases and emily was finally starting to settle into her role as unit chief. she was no hotch, but she was relying pretty heavily on her interpol experience and the bond the team had built over the years. with such a close knit team, it was always very easy to spot new comers in the office.
so when a woman breezed through the glass doors of the bullpen, emily wasn’t surprised to catch garcia’s bright pink cardigan hurrying after her to intercept the mystery woman. what she was surprised to see was a face she knew all too well.
y/n y/ln. in dc. in her bullpen? what alternate universe could she possibly have walked into this morning. she turned hastily to the mirror she kept in her office and started fluffing her hair quickly. she hadn’t seen y/n since her college graduation and it’s safe to say she looks very different now. not bad per say but older. feeling satisfied with her hair she rifled through her purse for some lipstick and anything to make her not look like it was monday morning.
down in the bullpen, y/n smiled at the brightly colored woman she’d just been stopped by. she scanned the bullpen over her shoulder hoping to catch sight of emily. after hearing the older woman had returned [allegedly from the dead], she hoped on the opportunity to pay her a visit while she was in town.
“good morning beautiful stranger. welcome to the bau, my name is penelope. can i help you with something?” the woman bounced in anticipation.
“hello, penelope. i’m actually looking for someone. your new unit chief actually.” y/n spoke as she shuffled the folder in her hand to shake penelope’s hand.
“emily? emily prentiss? do you have a crime case you’d like assistance on?” garcia asked.
“yes and no. she and i have some business to take care of, now that she’s returned stateside.” y/n smiled waving the folder in front of garcia.
“oh? business to take care of…” garcia repeated sweeping her eyes from the woman in front of her and emily’s office.
“mmhm. do you think she’s available for a little chat?” y/n asked nodding in amusement at the quirky woman.
“well i would think so— who should i say is here?”
“oh where are my manners, i’m y/n. she should remember me.” y/n smiled as garcia nodded her understanding before heading up the stairs to emily’s office.
“ma’am,” garcia spoke knocking on the open door of emily’s office.
“please stop calling me ma’am.” emily sighed wearily.
“sorry, im just nervous. there’s a really pretty woman down there saying she’s here to see you. and that you’ve got official business to take care of. well i don’t think she said official but she definitely said business. and she waved a folder in front of me. are you being sued or something?” garcia rambled.
emily eyed the tech analyst as she rambled and as she took a breath she held her hand up to stop her before she could start again. “y/n y/ln, right?”
“y/n— yes. i don’t know her last name but she said you should remember her. do you want me to go get her?”
“no, no. i’ll come down myself.” emily rose from the desk, giving herself another once over in the mirror before moving toward garcia and the door.
“wait, what was that?” garcia asked curiously.
“what— what was what? what are you talking about?” emily asked obliviously.
“did you just check yourself out? are you primping yourself? did you reapply your lipstick? oh this just got so much more interesting. who is this woman?” garcia jumped.
“i-what no to all of that,” emily lied as her cheeks heated. “and she’s just a friend from my college days.”
“yeah but what kind of friend? i don’t primp in my office when my college friends come to see me.”
emily peeked around the door frame into the bullpen and caught sight of y/n looking right back at her. the woman sent a flirty wave up toward the office and laughed softly as she watched emily’s cheeks heat in embarrassment.
“not now garcia.” emily mumbled as she straightened her clothes out one more time before descending the stairs to meet y/n. “y/n, what a surprise. what’s it been 10 years?”
“far more than that, em. you look good.” y/n smirked.
“wow, obviously not as good as you. garcia said you came on business?” emily replied trying and failing to tame the blush she’d been sporting since she headed down to the bullpen.
“well yes. and may i just say, you are one hard woman to track down.” y/n shook her head with a laugh.
“oh don’t i know it!” garcia piped in from her placed leaned against jj’s desk. at the intrusion, emily sent a glare her way. penelope grimaced and turned to face jj in fear.
“you’ve been looking for me?” emily asked curiously.
“i have for quite a while actually,” y/n smiled softly before waving the folder in emily’s direction. “we’re still married. and have been for about 20 years now. and let me just say, you’ve got a hell of a lot of anniversary gifts to make up for babe.”
“married?!” garcia exclaimed before slapping her hand over her mouth.
emily’s eyes widened exponentially as she caught all of the team’s eyes on her. the shock was evident on everyone’s face and she honestly couldn’t wash it off her own face.
“how about we go to my office and talk about this?” emily recovered, grabbing the folder and nodding toward the office upstairs.
“of course.” y/n nodded and followed emily into the office.
emily pointedly closed the door on prying eyes and turned to face y/n, “now that you’ve successfully fueled the office gossip fire for at least the next month. married for 20 years? is this about the netherlands? didn’t we get that annulled after we got back?”
“i thought so too. until i was a few weeks out from my wedding and they let us know that i was still in fact married according to netherlandian law.” y/n shrugged collapsing onto the couch.
“well i don’t think they call it netherlandian law,” emily paused catching the first part of what y/n said. “oh! you’re engaged. and i’m keeping you from getting married. i can try to get garcia to pull some strings online to help get the divorce finalized faster. or i can call someone over at interpol, im sure they can do something.”
y/n chuckled affectionately, “well while i appreciate the fact that you’d abuse your access to government resources for my sake. that ship has long sailed. the fact i was still married was the least of our problems. but i found that out and tried to track you down and that’s when your mother, still as lovely as i remember, let me know you had died.” y/n deadpanned, leveling emily with a look she knew very well.
“yeah, that was a whole thing.” emily grimaced.
“uh huh, im sure it was. after that, i just went with the whole widowed thing for a bit. until i heard again from your mother, so lovely, that you were alive again.”
“i didn’t realize you and my mother spoke so frequently.” emily mumbled taking a seat on the couch as well.
“you just keep giving us reasons to gab. anyways, i was in the states and figured id try to catch you after all these years. i brought the papers and figured you could sign them.”
“of course. i wouldn’t want to keep you from another marriage.” emily nodded hastily grabbing a pen to sign off.
“ah i figured you’d have run into the issue before me.”
emily dotted her and slid the folder back to y/n, “no, no one worth marrying. well besides you apparently.”
y/n smiled and giggled, “had i been aware, i would’ve been a far better wife to you but at least i didn’t widow you.”
“oh come on! what do you want me to say? had i known we were still married, i wouldn’t have died?” emily laugh incredulously.
“you had a wife to come home to, it could’ve been motivation.”
emily’s smile was free and contagious, “god you haven’t changed a bit.”
“not much sweet, but i can tell you have. lot of responsibility you got here agent.” y/n smiled sadly. “i hope you’re taking care of yourself. and your team.” there was a beat of admiration that washed over y/n’s face before she sighed and gathered the papers. “listen i’ll get out of your hair. thanks for divorcing me. always a pleasure seeing you.” y/n stood from the couch, emily following.
“of course, are you headed back right away?” emily asked hopefully.
“no i’m in the states for a bit for work, why?” y/n asked.
“oh i was just curious. figured maybe i could make up for this 20 anniversary dinners i missed.”
y/n grinned, “agent prentiss, are you asking me on a date?”
“i think i might be asking you on at least 20, if you want to of course.”
y/n walked over to emily’s desk and grabbed a pen and sticky note. scribbling something down and tucked the post it in emily’s blazer pocket with a smirk. “you better get planning then.” y/n threw a wink over her shoulder and left the office with a smile. all the agents scattered to make it seem like they weren’t intently trying to figure out what was going on behind the closed door. y/n stopped at garcia and smiled sweetly, “thank you penelope. have a good day everyone.”
everyone mumbled their replies and watched as emily’s alleged wife exit the bullpen. as soon as the elevators closed they all hurried up the stairs to emily’s open door.
“you’re married?!” garcia was the first to exclaim and emily sighed in exasperation. she eyed her chosen family and knew she wasn’t getting out of answering this. at all.
prompt: y/n is garcia’s neighbor and the girls come back from a rather rowdy night of salsa lessons and drinks and forget which apartment is garcia’s.
a/n: another crack drabble from my notes app but i couldn’t decide between jj and emily
“pen where are your keys?” emily spoke around a hiccup. they’d all had waaay too much to drink tonight and it was hitting the older woman as she swayed in the lobby of penelope’s apartment building. salsa dancing always brought out the women’s inner alcoholic and it was a miracle they’d even made it to the apartment building in general.
penelope, ever the excitable drunk, circled the lobby in a conga line of one but stopped next emily with a grin. “in here!” she grinned wiggling her cupcake shaped purse in front of emily’s drooped eyes.
the woman nodded and dug around in the cupcake until she felt the metal of the keys and pulled them free from the bag. “alright ladies, i think we’re ready to tackle the stairs now.”
“the stairs?” jj whined pushing herself up from the wall and toward emily.
“yes the stairs. the elevator is broken,” emily gestured to the metal doors with the paper sign on them. both jj and garcia boo’d loudly and mimed throwing tomatoes at the door. “plus i think we need the physical activity to sober up a bit. move out, soldiers.”
jj rolled her eyes and threw a dorky salute emily’s way before practically pulling herself up the stairs by the railings. garcia following closely behind and emily playing caboose on the train of drunk women. they make it all the way to her floor and pause in the hallway.
“pen did you decorate the entire hall?” jj asked in confusion. the normally empty hall looked like garcia’s home exploded all over every door.
“yeah! we had a neighbor decorating party. so now every door looks like mine.” garcia twirled unsteadily and poked one of the wreath covered doors.
“well which one is yours? it’s usually pretty easy to tell when i’m sober but i’m struggling a bit here.” emily asked as they walked the hall looking at each door.
mid spin garcia stops in front of a door with a potted planter and rainbow doormat and grins, “this one!”
jj furrowed her brows, “i thought you lived on this side facing the street…”
“the street is this way, jayje.” penelope singsonged as she extended her finger to boop her nose. “just get the key on my pink key ring. that’s where i keep my apartment key, so when im like this i can remember.”
emily looked jj wearily and shrugged before fishing out one of the two keys on the pink key ring. “as long as one of us is confident in this decision…” she mumbled before trying the key. when it didn’t turn she gazed up at the blondes in confusion. “um it’s not working.”
“oh oh wait, try to jiggle it. sometimes it gets stuck.”
emily wiggled the key all kinds of ways— unknowingly making quite a bit of noise in the hall. she turned to question garcia to complain when the lock turned in her hand and the door pulled open from the inside. all three women froze in shock and slowly allowed their eyes to pan up over the woman holding the door in her hand.
“hi,” she spoke with a laugh as she took in the hazy drunken cloud that was clearly covering the three agents on her doormat.
“garcia, who’s the hottie in pink?” jj whispered out of the side of her mouth, eyes never leaving her woman.
“jen,” emily groaned swatting the blonde’s hip as she watched the blush cover the woman’s cheeks.
“oh my god, y/n! what are you doing in my apartment?” garcia grinned, ignoring her bickering coworkers to pull her neighbor into a hug. y/n pushed her glasses up her nose and patted garcia’s back affectionately.
“penelope, you live across the hall babe.” y/n chuckled sweetly as she held the technical analyst by her shoulders to look her over. “and it looks like you’ve had quite a bit to drink, huh?”
penelope grinned, “uh huh. are you sure i don’t live here? it’s so pretty.”
“yeah hun, i’m sure. here why don’t i help y’all get inside and settled for the night?” y/n asked slipping her feet into a pair of slippers by the door and grabbed her keys. she turned to face the two other women leaning on either side of her doorframe. “and maybe i can introduce myself to your friends.” she spoke with a wink before corralling all the agents across the hall and over to penelope’s door. which looked pretty similar to her own.
emily shoved the keys toward y/n clumsily, “you probably need those.”
y/n accepted the key with a laugh and unlocked the door. “thanks hun,” she pushed the door open and held it open for all three women to file in. “welcome to you actual home penelope.” all three agents fell onto the closest flat surface and released various groans and sighs of relief at not being stood upright. “god you guys really got your fill on whatever alcoholic drink you could. i’m gonna go find you guys some water and advil. don’t move— unless you think you’re gonna puke.”
as soon as the woman turned her back to head into the kitchen, jj and emily both sat up to face garcia. “when’d you get a hot neighbor?” jj asked accusatorially.
“yeah! last i heard there was some old mean lady across the hall. you’ve been holding out on us.” emily chided, poking garcia’s shoulder pointedly.
“down you animals, she moved in a couple months ago. we’ve been a bit busy with you know the dark evil cruelest corners of the US. sorry i didn’t find the time to throw in my new neighbor is hot and single and very into women.” garcia rattled off with a shrug.
“well yes, we’ve been busy but sometimes hot neighbors trump serial killers.” jj replied matter of factly causing emily to tilt her head in thought.
“shut up jj.” she deadpanned with a shake of the head.
“hey!” the blonde called with a pout.
before anyone could actually continue the conversation y/n rounded the island with three glasses of water and a palm full of pain killers. “it seems in your inebriated states, you’ve all forgotten how open floor plans work.”
“oh my god, i think she heard us.” garcia whispered [not actually] to the now blushing women next to her.
“what did y’all drink?” y/n asked watching as each woman downed their water and pills.
“something called the green fairy. very good and very effective.” garcia replied.
“that’s for sure.” y/n nodded in understanding before turning her gaze to the other two women. “as flattered as i am ladies, you can come introduce yourselves when you’ve sobered a bit. that’s if any of you remember this tomorrow.”
“i don’t think either of can forget a face like yours.” emily flirted with a smirk, almost seeming completely sober. until a hiccup distracted her.
“we’ll see about that.” y/n laughed before heading to the door. “i trust all of you can at least get yourselves ready bed. i’ll lock you in for the night.”
“thanks y/n!” garcia sang they watched her disappear through the doorway.
“no prob, pen. come get your keys tomorrow! good night ladies.” the three women heard the door lock from the outside and the echo of the other woman’s door closing in the hallway.
“someone remind me to flirt with her tomorrow.” jj spoke, eyes half open but finger pointed to where y/n had been standing last.
“i’ll set a reminder in my phone.” garcia said pulling the phone from her pocket.
a/n: started this wine drunk, finished it applebee’s $10 bacardi rum bucket drunk. installment in the girl next door 🏠 universe. southern belle reader is literally me. [this made me sound like an alcoholic but i’m not babes i promise]
y/n: calling all sexy agents to the front!!
jj: All?? What other sexy agents do you know, babe?
y/n: okay maybe not all. just some. or a few? wait i’ve got it. a couple! calling a couple sexy agents to the front. yes that’s it.
emily: What is going on right now?
y/n: yay! everyone is here! who wants to come pick me up? there’s a pretty nifty reward in it for ya
emily: Is this you telling us you’re too drunk to get home tonight?
jj: What’s the prize?
y/n: rhymes with douth to douth mesuscitation
y/n: and wine drunk? yes. joanne already called roy to come get her but i bet her that one of you’d get here first because y’all are sexier and therefore faster.
jj: You’re darn tootin’— we’re on it.
emily: While I appreciate the confidence, don’t Roy and Joanne live like four blocks away from the bar you’re at?
y/n: yeah but that doesn’t matter— sexiness cancels out logic.
emily: And alcohol also seems to cancel out logic, we’ll be there soon. Stay with Joanne please.
y/n: let the race begin!
Apparently the younger woman was right because JJ and Emily did beat Roy to the bar. Not by much but by some. All three partners met at the door of the bar with knowing smirks.
“I see you two were also informed of the race those two cooked up tonight.” Roy chuckled as he slowed to a stop.
JJ, ever the competitive one, reached for the door with a knowing grin. “Yep and we win.”
Roy laughed good-naturedly and patted JJ’s shoulder, “i’m sure the prize will be well worth it. i would’ve dropped her home myself had they not been hellbent on this little test.”
“Same here Roy. When those two are left alone who knows what to expect. This one might be just as bad.” Emily teased poking JJ’s side.
“Hey, just for that I won’t be sharing my reward with you.” JJ shrugged leading the trio into the bar.
Roy grinned as he watched JJ weave through the remaining patrons, “You’ve definitely got your hands full with those two. I do not envy you.”
Emily shook her head affectionately as she and Roy made it over to Y/n and Joanne’s table. “They keep me busy for sure.”
As soon they were in eyesight, Joanne was teetering to her feet toward Roy. “You lost. I even gave you a head start.” She pouted, all but falling into the man’s arms.
“I told ya it wouldn’t matter. We’ve got the law on our side! Plus they’ll do anything for the right incentive.” Y/n grinned, hanging from JJ’s arms.
Joanne turned clearly ready to argue some more but Roy cut her off sweetly, “Oh come on Jo, we’ll beat em next time. Let’s say goodnight.”
After practically dragging both women out of the bar, they all parted ways for their own treks home. Somehow Y/n had pulled JJ into the backseat with her, and she after losing a battle with a seatbelt she’d settled into the older woman’s side hazily.
Now they’d seen their girlfriend tipsy, quite often actually. When Garcia was around they tended to go drink for drink. But they hadn’t really experienced her this drunk before. And this was proving to be rather entertaining.
“Lord have mercy,” Y/n groaned, hand caressing JJ’s cheek.
“What’s up baby?” JJ frowned locking their fingers in concern.
“you know if sexy were a crime, you’d be servin’ a life sentence.” The southern twang the younger woman normally sported seemed to multiply by 100. Her eyes were glazed but her smile was bright and JJ was just two steps shy of falling victim to that honeyed voice.
“Is that so?” JJ grinned leaning about as close as her seatbelt would allow her.
“Mmhmm,” Y/n hummed leaning in as well. And just as their lips were about to meet, Y/n’s body jolted back with a hiccup. And all JJ could do was laugh affectionately and pull the younger woman closer.
“Oh, you’re so drunk.” JJ chuckled.
“And cute. Don’t forget cute.”
“Yeah Jen, don’t forget cute.” Emily teased from the drivers seat while JJ rolled her eyes. At Emily’s voice, Y/n wrestled her way out of JJ’s arms and turned her glazed eyes on the woman behind the wheel.
“Hot damn, Mily. Pull over. “ Y/n urged, fighting the seatbelt to poke at the older woman.
“Why? Are you gonna throw up?” Emily asked, concern taking over her voice.
“No but I’d like to put the backseat of this car to use.”
“HaHa! Nice try sweetheart, but we’re almost home. I’m sure you can wait just a bit longer.” Emily tried to placate.
“Please,” Y/n whined, eyes locking on Emily’s in the rearview mirror. “I’ll be good.”
Emily’s fingers tightened around the steering wheel almost imperceptibly and her eyes shot back to the road. “I’m sure you will. But until we get home how about you snuggle up to Jen for a bit.”
Y/n groaned but flopped back against the seat obediently and Emily was pleased to see that the alcohol hadn’t turned the younger woman completely militant. JJ smiled and pulled her close and tried to hold her laughter back when Y/n mumbled something that sounded like ‘Snugglefer’. It wasn’t long at all before JJ felt her girlfriend relax against her completely and with a soft kiss to her head she smiled up at Emily.
“She’s out. Thought she had you for a second there.”
“She almost did. But don’t tell her that.” Emily rolled her eyes with a laugh.
a/n: the people have spoken— here is my contribution to the melissa schemmenti x reader community based on a crack idea from my notes app. bare with me, this is not edited and probably pretty bad-- but fuck it we ball ig. i also couldn't think of a name for this like at all. my tiktok fyp sort of throttled me into all things reality tv and that sparked this idea. also if you liked this feel free to check out my lisa ann walter masterlist for some of my older stuff.
”So now no one knows if they’re coming back or if they’re gonna pull a New York Housewives and just start over.” Melissa huffed over her shoulder to Barbara.
“Girlfriend, I told you, I don’t know these people, and I don’t care.”
Melissa watched as Barb entered the school ahead of her and shook her head. She really shouldn’t be surprised. Her work wife had always been very clear about her feelings when it came to the Housewives. And Melissa had tried to get her hooked. They’d tried every franchise and all she got from Barb was a disgruntled scolding for caring so much about these random women and their woes. Melissa can even recall Barbara advising her to pick up the Bible if she wanted to follow the trials and tribulations of someone she would talk about.
Melissa wasn’t normally someone who participated in any discussions about the things she enjoyed. She liked what she liked and anyone who didn’t agree with her could kick rocks. But letting Jacob move in had really changed the way she consumed media. She and the history teacher would come home from work, crack open a bottle, and go to town judging the various players in their programs. With him around, discussion became the norm. And now that he’s moved out, she’s sorta missing that community. Not that she’d admit it to anyone.
She bound into the teacher’s lounge, putting her lunch away and settling in her seat for the news like she did every morning. Jim Gardner was the only man she wanted to start her morning with. Midway through the program, excited voices floated through the swinging door.
“I’m telling you— they’re married. She won’t say anything but there’s no way they’re just girlfriends.” Both veteran teachers turned their heads at the newcomers with frowns in place. Y/n, the newest edition to the Abbott staff, winced almost instantly under both Barbara and Melissa’s gaze and quickly mimed a zipper over her lips. Barb smiled gratefully and turned back to the television, but Melissa’s eyes lingered a bit longer as they always seemed to do when the younger woman entered the room. And hard as she tried to keep her glare in place— once the teacher went back to her conversation quietly the frown melted into something softer. Almost curious.
Y/n Y/ln was something of a hot-button topic for Melissa. She’d started at the beginning of the school year, taking on the higher-grade English duties upstairs. And everyone seemed to love her. She’d flown in the week before classes started with a bright smile and brownies for the teachers. She’d spent her first month covering recesses and lunch duties for absolutely anyone who asked. And had even worked her way into some after-school clubs. She was everywhere. And after five months at Abbott, she still carried herself with the same level of joy and excitement she’d started with. It was infuriating if you asked Melissa. And Barb had asked her before. It seemed the reasons everyone else gravitated toward the new teacher were the exact reasons Melissa claimed made her dislike her. She was a kiss-ass, a pushover, and far too happy in the morning to not be doing some kind of drug. But every time Barb grilled her about it she never mentioned how distractingly shiny her hair was. Or how expressive her eyes were when she spoke about literally anything. And she all but refused to even think about how her eyes seemed almost glued to her figure whenever they passed each other in the hall during the day. She just couldn’t allow it. And she definitely wasn’t watching this morning as Y/n filled her cup of coffee and then exited the lounge with another teacher to continue her conversation.
Once she’d left the room, Melissa’s attention turned back to the television as if nothing happened. But there was Barbara, lips pursed knowingly and eyebrows set in a challenge.
“What?” Melissa asked, fighting the blush wanting to crawl up her neck. All Barb gave her in response was a pointed hum that told Melissa all she needed to know. She wasn’t fooling anybody.

“I can’t believe this is how you spend your free time. Here I was thinking you were reading Shakespearean Sonnets from three to eight when you actually just cyberbully Housewife fans.” Jacob laughed in disbelief as he leaned against the corner of Y/n’s desk.
“Okay first of all— Eileen Davidson’s delivery of ‘How dare you?’ after being called a Beast by Kim Richards was very Shakespearean. And secondly, cyberbully is a very strong word. I’m simply engaging in dialogue with my fellow Real Housewives fans. It’s not my fault I’m good at reasoning and evidence. Argumentation was my jam in college.” Y/n explained with a smile.
“So you’re saying you use your intelligence to cyberbully gay men and old ladies.”
“How rude, the Bravo-verse is not just for gay men and old ladies. It’s for everyone. I don’t discriminate on the forums— I’m an equal opportunity bully.”
“Huh, who knew there was such a sinister side to such a sweet woman.”
Y/n shrugged, “I’m multi-dimensional. Anyway, I brought all this up to run my lesson idea by you. We’re doing a unit on dialogue and I really think with some appropriately placed censors we can make it work.”
“Oh, That’s so engaging! And with so many franchises you can pull from quite a few scenes.” Jacob affirmed excitedly.
“Exactly. And it gives me an excuse to talk about my favorite show on the job.”

Lunch time came and the teachers found themselves in the lounge chatting idly at their assigned tables. Melissa’s glasses were perched on her nose as she scrolled through an article recounting the last episode. Jacob having leaned back in his chair, caught sight of the headline and instantly brightened.
“Oh Mel Mel, have I got an opportunity for community for you!”
Melissa slowly looked at the young man, unimpressed, “No thanks, I got more than enough community already.”
Jacob sighed at the woman’s lack of enthusiasm but trudged on, sure this opportunity would be up her alley. “Well, I just thought you’d take to the idea of arguing with people anonymously about the Real Housewives. There’s apparently a whole world of people discussing your programs online and from what I’ve heard they need some strong opinions to balance out the nonsense. I just think it might be nice for you to have a space to freely share your questionable takes about these extremely vapid women every week. A community is waiting for you.”
“Questionable takes? All of my takes are gold like my hatred for Eileen Davidson. That’s a very valid and based take. I’m always right. I don’t need no internet dummies telling me otherwise.”
“Well, when you realize I’m right and you start bullying randos online– I’ll be expecting a thank you.”
Melissa scoffed and watched as Jacob wrote the website down on a sticky note for her. “Huh, I’m sure you will be.”
-
She really wasn’t planning on looking at the website. She had no reason to. She was completely content to live with her Housewives thoughts. But then the Real Housewives of New York reboot episode was absolutely insane. And she needed to know if she was the only one in complete disbelief at this Puerto Rico trip. She pulled the sticky note from her purse and cautiously typed it in. She would only look at what was being discussed. Just a little peek.

MeredithApologist: YES! YOU ARE.
HeathersReciepts: how can you hate the woman who brought us receipts, proof, timelines, screenshots?
Melissa chuckled quietly to herself as she read through the comments on the post. She hated to give Jacob any credit but this might actually be interesting. She continued to scroll until she found a recent post addressing the latest episode of RHONY.

She tapped into the replies and started skimming reactions. Lots of which she thought were stupid but not stupid enough to warrant a response of some kind. That was until she came across a crazy reply.
RepudiatedHousewives: Honestly, the trips just started and Brynn is already acting insane. Talk about a producer plant, am I right?
Now Melissa wasn’t a fan of Brynn but she also was smart enough to acknowledge Erin as a problem as well. Brynn didn’t stir things up all on her own. And also what kind of username is RepudiatedHousewives? Talk about pretentiousness. She couldn’t resist. She just had to respond.
RedHotPhilly11: repudiatedhousewives , you must be as pretentious and stupid as your username if you think Brynn is the only one producing this season. Erin is right there?
Y/n sat up immediately seeing the new reply flash across her screen. Pretentious and stupid? What the hell was this person’s beef? Brynn is a problematic producer plant, that’s just facts. So what if Erin gets wrapped up in her bullshit– she’s still better than Brynn.
RepudiatedHousewives: RedHotPhilly11– i’m assuming you’ve got your looks going for you if you’re pulling Erin into Brynn’s evil. Erin’s not perfect but Brynn is obviously the bigger issue here.
RedHotPhilly11: Yes, I’m hot. But that’s all you’re right about.

↳ RedHotPhilly11: I feel like I have to admire your persistence but that feels to nice.

The morning after the finale episode of the season was a doozy. Both Melissa and Y/n had spent the evening going back and forth on the forum dissecting the drama that unfolded on screen. Other users had tried chiming into their conversation but both RedHotPhilly11 and RepudiatedHousewives refused to engage with anyone other than each other. And that energy seemed to carry into the teacher’s lounge that morning. Melissa was at her seat as usual, nursing her second cup of coffee as the news came to an end. And Y/n burst through the door with a sigh heading straight for the coffee machine. Her entrance obviously caught the attention of the other teachers but she was too busy mentally urging the coffee machine to brew faster to care.
“Woah, Shakespeare what’s up with you?” Jacob asked, sliding up next to the woman with a frown. “You’re never down here this late.”
“I had a rather late night so I decided to sleep in for a bit,” Y/n answered pulling the coffee to her chest with a sigh.
“Oh yes, too busy cyberbullying to get a proper night’s sleep?” The history teacher poked. At his jovial tease, the other teachers seemed to tune in. All eager to learn more about the English teacher.
“You cyberbully?” Janine asked incredulously from her spot next to Gregory. “That’s so mean, why would you do that?”
Y/n rolled her eyes and glared at Jacob pointedly before addressing Janine, “I do not cyberbully. I merely chat about television online. If people have bad opinions, I feel obligated to correct them.”
“Oh right, season finale for RHONY was last night. I’m sure you were lighting that little forum up, huh?”
“You know it. Although I’ve got this one person on the forum who replies to everything I post and we were going back and forth all night. They just know every button to push. Like last night, I was going off about the way Brynn was keke-ing with the producers after causing all that chaos the night before. A literal production plant! And then that RedHotPhilly11 comes in my replies arguing with me about facts! So we were going at it for quite a bit.” At Y/n’s words, Jacob’s eyes turned to Melissa curiously with a smile. Maybe the redhead had taken him up on his recommendation. And at her arched eyebrows and startled expression he was right.
“Wait a minute, you’re Repugnant Housewives?” Melissa’s hard voice piped in.
Y/n’s eyes widened in confusion, “Um no, I’m Repudiatedhousewives. How do you even know that?”
“Cause I’m the one pushing your buttons.”
”You’re RedHotPhilly11?” Y/n tilted her head in shock but that didn’t last long before a knowing smirk settled on her face. “Huh, now that I’m saying that out loud I’m not that surprised.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Melissa challenged, ready for another fight. Offline.
“You are hot.” Y/n shrugged easily. Everyone in the room seemed to freeze at her admission but she stood tall in her words and leveled Melissa with a knowing gaze. “What? Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten our very first argument. Where you very boldly called my username pretentious and stupid.”
“Right right, and you said the only thing I had going for me was my looks,” Melissa smirked.
“And your only reply was that you’re hot. Again, can’t argue with facts.” Y/n snickered. “Wow, I can’t believe that of all the people on that forum we’ve been sparing with each other for the last 5 weeks. I didn’t even know you watched the housewives.”
“Who are you kidding, I’ve been watching longer than you’ve been alive kid.”
“Doubtful, I think I came out of the womb watching that franchise.” Y/n pushed up from her place at the counter to walk closer to Melissa’s table.
“Ah what do you know? You probably can’t even remember the original RHONY cast before this godawful reboot.” Melissa goaded, rising from her chair to look Y/n in the eyes.
“Wanna bet?” Y/n said and just as the women were closing the charged distance between them, Barbara reached up to pull Melissa back.
“Alright ladies, I think that’s enough fun for the morning. Why don’t we save this energy for your little chatroom, hm?”
Melissa shrugged and took her seat again working to push her irritation down. But as assessed her body– it wasn’t irritation she found. And Y/n found herself fighting the unexpected but familiar heat that a bossy beautiful woman could inspire within her. They both slinked back to their corners and everyone in the lounge exchanged curious looks over their heads. Not much later the school bell rang, and almost everyone dispersed. Except Y/n and Melissa. They eyed each other cautiously before Melissa broke the silence.
“Reunion part one, next week, my place. Bring wine.”
“Roger that, Red. Maybe we can tag team some poor souls while we’re at it.”
Melissa grinned at the prospect and nodded before heading out the door, “Now you’re speaking my language.”
Let’s just assume they’re still trying to get out of Bravo Forum jail.
